Dear partners in ministry,

Greetings in Jesus. I am in the departure lounge of a country where the vast majority of the population are Muslims. I’ve been speaking at a conference for approximately 300 believers—all from a Muslim background—mostly in leadership of small groups of Muslim-background believers. When I first visited this nation, there were hardly any such believers; now there are many many thousands. It’s been wonderful to see what God is doing in this nation, and a great privilege to minister God’s word to these people. OM has been at the heart of what God has done in this land—a great privilege and, I’m sure, in answer to your prayers. So, thank you for your prayers for our work around the world, and do please keep praying for us and for the requests which now follow.

Europe

France: Field Leader Jan Coetzer underwent another invasive operation on 24 March. A tumour and part of his pancreas was removed. Pray that it will be confirmed that the tumour is not malignant and that recovery will go well. Please also pray for Marie and their three children.

Ireland: The shock and disgust of the recent murders in the North has swept through the country and we ask you to pray for peace. The economic downturn continues to affect many. As Ireland has the highest rate of suicide among young men in Europe, let’s pray that people’s lives will be saved, not lost. Pray that the Irish would hear again the message of St Patrick and find their hope restored in the Lord.

Spain:
 At the end of 2008, OM moved its base from Talavera to
Naron (Galicia) in the northwest, a town with no
previous church or Christian testimony. God provided a
building next to a new church that Field Leaders Trevor and Manoli Allan have been establishing for three years. This building will have an office, store room,
kitchen, second-hand shop, food-distribution centre and a Christian bookshop. With the nearest Christian bookshop now in Madrid, over 600 km away, the team is grateful that God has put them there at the right time. “Finding ourselves in a town with no evangelical
church but a lot of needy people, while also situated in a larger area with many churches, but no Christian bookshop, makes us
grateful to God,”
 they commented.

Czech Republic: OM, along with 5 other mission agencies, hosted a daylong event on 7 February in Prague to present the call to world
 missions—the first such event in seven years. Each agency presented their work and invited participants to
consider serving abroad. Wolfgang Binder, from Wycliffe, challenged participants to change the world before the world
changes them. Despite a relatively low turnout, participants were enthusiastic. Field Leader
 Pavel Zoul said that the agencies presented the call to mission together,
 as one body.
 Pray that
God would raise up Czechs to go into worldwide missions.



Montenegro: Volker loves using arts in ministry. As you tell a Bible story, he simultaneously
draws a large picture of it on a whiteboard or paper. This is a
treat for Roma children gathered to listen
and watch because, when Volker has finished drawing, they get
to colour it! Volker draws for the children every other week at the Roma shanty-camp
near Bar, where the OM team has befriended the residents.
The excitement mounts as Volker affixes a huge sheet of
paper to the side of the van and gets out his markers. After the Bible
story is told, they hand out crayons to the children, who fight over the
best drawing spots. Yet a beautiful picture emerges from the
chaos, and Volker can see he’s brought a touch of joy to these children.
Please pray for the Roma
children and families who learn of the love of Jesus through words,
deeds and pictures.


Poland: With bitterly cold temperatures this winter, people in Kutno gladly accepted hot drinks and food from
the Pentecostal Church’s ‘Mobile Coffee Shop’. New believers, who
 struggled with alcoholism for many years, initiated this ministry—a living testimony of our 
God who transforms lives. They shared the love of
Jesus with passersby, and welcomed them 
to church the following week. Pray that God would keep these new believers strong and protect them 
from the ever-real temptation of alcohol.

Country Leader Arek Delik has become Director of 
the Missions Department of the Pentecostal Union of Poland, responsible for national mission 
projects and Polish missionaries on the field, and for promoting
 world missions in the church.

Resourcing

The Face to Face (F2F) course has been a blessing to many Christian workers struggling with personal shortcomings, past wounds and difficulties relating to others. The course is for Christian workers who want to develop their relationship with God and grow in self-understanding. It is ideal for those on furlough or in transition, as well as for ongoing personal development. Three courses are offered this year:

Kitchener, Canada	22 May–07 June
North Wales, UK	06–22 November
Johannesburg, RSA	18 November–03 December

Spaces are limited to 24 per course, so please act quickly to ensure getting a place. Please note: The courses are open to other Christian workers: non-OM people, other organisations, local pastors and lay people. Inquiries should be directed to gill.trainor@ict.om.org

Prayer is appreciated for those considering the course and while the courses are underway, as this can be a major turning point in peoples’ lives.

Emerging mission movements

Mozambique: It was the poorest nation in the
world in the early ‘90s, with 12 percent of its population now suffering from AIDS. Since ’99, churches throughout the country have sent their most
promising members to OM’s two-year mission training school, one of the
only Christian programmes available. “There are many believers and
evangelical churches that we can mobilize to
evangelise the neighbours in the Makua and Yao tribes,” says Field Leader Antonio Nipueda. Bible teaching and practical missions
training is practiced by teaching in churches and
visiting isolated areas to share the Gospel with unreached people. In
November, 10 students graduated from the programme. Not only do they evangelise and plant churches in
unreached groups, but some become head pastors in their own
local denominations—sending 
more people for the ministry. Please pray
for Antonio and the team as they train more national missionaries to
reach the lost, and for necessary finances to
 develop this ministry.

World faiths

North Africa:
 What do OMers do with the boldness exhibited by new Muslim-background
believers in sharing their faith in ‘closed’ countries? It’s a good
problem to have, according to one worker living there. Chad* met Agmad*, who was kicked out of his home after
deciding to follow Jesus. Agmad had a strong
desire to share his newfound faith with anyone who would listen. “Many (new national believers) aren’t familiar with official
persecution, so we’re experiencing a movement of boldness amongst them, even at the cost of separation from their family,” said Chad. Agmad, who has been helped with new accommodation, chats with
people online and shares the Gospel openly. He has set up a
website and regularly corresponds with people through that. Pray for a revival throughout North Africa. Praise God for the boldness
of new Muslim-background believers. Pray for
wisdom in how and whom they share with, and for their protection—and for wisdom for the foreigners as they disciple these new
believers. *Names changed

Turning Point (UK): The March training programme inspection* went very well; thank you for your prayers. We will not receive a final report until another OM team based in the UK has their inspection, which is anticipated within the next month. At this time we are anticipating a good recommendation. (* government accreditation; see March ‘09 update)

In the ‘90s our team started reaching out to Arabic speakers in Central London. This has now expanded to others from North Africa, Middle East, Central and East Asia and includes Arabic/English Sunday meetings, small group Bible Studies, monthly dinner fellowships, visitation, a parent & toddlers group, and street evangelism. Please pray that this would be a testimony to the world around us and impact His kingdom.

Several regular attendees are refugees or asylum seekers. Often, they do not have permanent residency or housing, and their families remain in their home countries. Please pray for their continued spiritual growth and for fellowship with other believers.

As a young woman approached the booktable, Serena* asked if she would like a free DVD about Jesus. Jasmine*, a young woman from The Gulf, brushed by as if she had not heard and began looking at other literature. Serena repeated the question and noticed that Jasmine was studying her lips; Jasmine was deaf. She took the literature and DVD and rummaged through her bag. Finding her phone, she typed a message on it: “Is He really the son of God?” Serena looked at her and pointed to the name Jesus on the DVD. “Yes,” she said and nodded, “He is.”

Serena has met with Jasmine at a local coffee shop to write back and forth about Jesus and the Christian faith. Jasmine is interested in meeting weekly to learn more about the Bible. Though unable to hear, spiritually she has an eager and willing ear to hear the voice of the Living God! *Names changed

South Asia: In Bangladesh, six people came to faith in the past month in the same area. We hope to develop leadership training by running a training camp in April. We are looking for the right venue and for the right people to go.

In Pakistan, the men’s travelling team has visited local areas to take church meetings, distribute literature and show films. During a time of park ministry, one brother reported: “I met a national believer and offered him literature as a gift, which he happily accepted. He said he had long wanted such a copy—did I have any more? I promised I would bring him what he asked for, next time.”

The ladies team were greatly encouraged at Christmas when they gave out cards to other ladies in a village where there is much demonic activity in the area. Although there is a little church, many only attend at major festivals. One girl they met was due to marry soon. The ladies explained how good it is to start married life in a relationship with God, and talked about the qualities of a good wife. The girl began a friendship with Him then and there. The ladies hope that her new life will become fruitful and that her whole household will be blessed.

Another lady the team visited had experienced all four of her brothers dying in the last four years on the same day of the same month. She was very frightened by these circumstances. The team explained that only God can help her and her family in this sort of demonic activity. These are not easy things for the team to talk about, and they need much wisdom and protection.

Turkey: Serpil’s husband is in prison for murder. She has a lot of anger and has often been critical of Anna at the ladies’ tea parties. While in Germany, Anna felt impressed by the Lord to buy her a gift of body lotion. When she gave it to her, Serpil burst into tears and said, “I am very lonely. People go on the Muslim pilgrimage and never think to bring me anything. You are a Christian and yet you have brought me a gift.” Pray that Serpil will receive into her life the greatest gift of Love.

Tajikistan: “Are you Iranian or Afghani?” We’re asked this question when people hear us speaking Tajik with a foreign accent. I stop for a chat on my way to the bazaar with an 87-year-old WWII veteran; we sit in the sun and chat. On my way to work I play football with two 10-year-old boys; their grandfather is in Russia working and their dad has invited me to drink tea. Just this morning I paid my respects at an azor (40 days’ mourning) for a neighbour who died recently. The wailing and shouting of the men wakes us at 6:00 each morning. A neighbourhood elder lives next door and has invited us round for supper this week. He lost his job at the silk factory in the days it employed 1100 people. Please pray that some of these contacts develop into good friendships and lasting fruit.

In an interview for new staff, Gul said, “Please pray that my husband will allow me to work with you. It’s a long way to travel and I’ll probably have to get up at 4.00am to do all the housework before coming, but I so want to work here. Last year when I attended your seminar, I sensed there was a real fire burning in this place. I really want to work in this project.”

The local Christian manager and I replied, “Yes, there is a fire here: God’s love burning in our hearts.” After a few days we heard that her husband had given her permission to work with us. Please pray for Gul and our other local Tajik colleagues, that they may hear more about this fire.

Relief & development

Sudan: News from Operation Mercy, a partner organisation…
The Vocational Training programme provides training in carpentry, metalwork, auto mechanics and agriculture. It is working much better since a bazaar held before Christmas to sell what we had produced. We now have several orders and more coming in for carpentry and metalwork. Not many people bring cars for repair, but the mechanics teacher has been busy teaching the boys to drive and do other work. The agriculture teacher replanted the farm with the boys, so they are looking forward to eating their own produce.

Our biggest need is for a building block project. Pray for funds for the machinery and set up costs, and secondly, that we find people able to run the project. We need to recruit an ex-patriate to run the project for at least one year to ensure that we get a good market for the blocks, ensure that it is run efficiently and that local people are trained to do the job well. We also need local people to work on the project. We will hire graduated boys from our centres as labourers but an experienced, mature local builder is needed to run the project. Thank you for helping us make an impact in the lives of many!

Pioneering intitiatives

Chile: 
Hal and Sandra Henson in Santiago are pioneering OM’s first-ever 
3-week mission trip called The Next Adventure for early retirees or
 Finishers, ages 45–plus. From 7–28 March four participants from 
England, Switzerland and the USA took part in an innovative programme that combined sightseeing with a behind-the-scenes look at the
country’s spiritual realities, along with hands-on evangelism! The Hensons, themselves early retirees, explain: “It’s an
exploratory trip to show people what’s happening here, so they can see how they might plug into missions. Included is a Life Direction Seminar
 that looks at spiritual gifting and a Biblical worldview. Men
 and women need to understand how they can be used by God in other countries!” Pray that God will use The Next Adventure teams to lead many Finishers 
to involvement in missions.



Ships

Logos Hope: It is exciting to finally welcome hundreds of
people to the ship every day (read ministry updates at
 www.omships.org). At the same time, there are startup challenges that strain our
resources. We are understaffed in several key ministry
 areas. There are many vacancies for young people to join this
 year.
Though the ship is fully certified for service, three
high priority projects are: (1) the installation of a fresh water plant (turning sea water into 
drinking water) needed before the ship can make long sea 
voyages;
(2) a heavy fuel oil supply system, which will significantly improve cost efficiencies and pay for itself in fuel 
savings within one year; and (3) completing the outfit of the Hope Theatre, the main auditorium
 on board.

Once again, on behalf of over 5400 workers from over 90 countries working in over 110 countries, I thank you deeply for your prayers and support.

Think again
Purity and the Gospel

For many years, I have understood that the aspect of the Gospel dealing with forgiveness of guilt is not perceived as relevant in many cultures, where people think not in terms of guilt and righteousness but of in terms of shame and honour. In communicating the Gospel to them, it is vital to show that Jesus died on the cross not only to forgive the penalty of our guilt, but also to cover the disgrace of our shame.

Recently, though, I have gained a new understanding significant for those ministering among Muslims…and perhaps among others as well.

Everyday defilement; defilement every day

I remember a long-ago bus trip in Turkey during which I had the opportunity to listen in as two Muslims discussed their message. Two young women were sitting behind me—one with a head scarf that signalled she was a devout Muslim, while her more secular friend was bare-headed. The devout girl was extolling the many advantages of being an observant Muslim. I eavesdropped with interest to hear what this conservative girl thought were the main attractions of Islam. “Our religion teaches you the right way to go to the toilet. You should enter the dirty place left foot first, and leave it right foot first. Then you stay pure yourself.”

My reaction at the time was to laugh at the banality of this nitpicking legalism. Since then, though, I have realised that purity and defilement are major issues that govern the lives of most Muslims. More importantly, I have come to understand that Jesus died not just to deal with our guilt and our shame; Jesus also died to cleanse us from our defilement.

Keeping clean, Leviticus-style

Large portions of Islamic teaching are concerned with how to become clean and stay clean. Every sexual encounter must be followed by total immersion in water. Praying must be preceded by ritual ablutions and there is extensive teaching about what violates the state of purity so that prayers are counted as invalid. Most agree that yawning or passing wind mean you have to wash again before you can pray. Muslims spend most of their lives in a state of ritual defilement.

While this may seem strange to Westerners and Christian-background people, it would be very familiar to the writer of Leviticus—a book we tend to skip over. Here foods, discharges, diseases and dead bodies cause ritual defilement that exclude the worshipper from the sanctuary, a defilement that can only be cleansed by washings and sacrifice. At the time, these divine ordinances clearly had great value in training the conscience of Israel to distinguish between clean and unclean, to understand holiness, and to keep them separate from the unclean nations around them (Leviticus 11:43–47).

Jesus’ purity cleanses defilement

However, Jesus radically and fundamentally reinter-preted the Mosaic legislation. It is no longer what goes into the body that defiles, but what comes from the heart. In Mark 7:21,22 he teaches that “greed, malice, deceit, lewdness” are to be avoided with the same disgust and revulsion that were previously directed at pork or leprosy.

In Mark 5:25ff, a woman made unclean by her bleeding touches Jesus. Her uncleanness should have made him become unclean as well. However, Jesus is so radically holy that the normal outcome is reversed: rather than Jesus being defiled, the woman is cleansed! Jesus removes defilement. He is able to do so because his death fulfils the sacrifices of Leviticus to remove defilement. Hebrews 9:11–14 expounds the ceremonial significance of the cross, teaching that only “the blood of Christ can cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death.”

The attraction of cleansing

On a recent trip to Kenya, I heard about a movement of several thousand Muslims who had come to faith in Isa Al Masih (Jesus the Messiah). What had attracted them to Him? Jesus, they discovered, could purify them by His blood…and purify their culture through His Word.

We need to understand from Scripture, and in the cultures we serve, the importance of dealing with defilement. I believe it may be another powerful way to present the gospel to Muslims, as well as to all others for whom ritual purity is an important concern.

Queridos compañeros de ministerio,

Saludos en el nombre de Jesús. Estoy en el hall de salida del aeropuerto en un país donde la vasta mayoría de la población es musulmana. He predicado en una conferencia para aproximadamente 300 creyentes, todos ellos con trasfondo musulmán, la mayoría de los cuales son líderes de pequeños grupos de creyentes de trasfondo musulmán. Cuando visité esta nación por primera vez, quizás había algún creyente con estas características, ahora hay muchos muchos miles. Es maravilloso ver lo que Dios está haciendo en esta nación, y es un gran privilegio ministrar la palabra de Dios a estas personas. OM ha estado en el corazón de lo que Dios está haciendo en esta tierra, es un gran privilegio y, estoy seguro, una respuesta a tus oraciones. Gracias por tus oraciones por nuestro trabajo alrededor del mundo y, por favor, sigue orando por nosotros y por los pedidos que encontrarás más abajo.

Europa

Francia: El Líder de Campo Jan Coetzer fue intervenido quirúrgicamente, una vez más, el 24 de Marzo. Le quitaron un tumor y parte de su páncreas. Ora para que se confirme que el tumor es benigno y que la recuperación vaya bien. Por favor ora también por Marie y sus tres hijos.

Irlanda: El shock y la desaprobación por los recientes asesinatos en el Norte se han esparcido por todo el país y te pedimos que ores por paz. La caída de la economía continúa afectando a muchos. Irlanda tiene el índice más alto de suicidio entre jóvenes varones en Europa, oremos para que las vidas sean salvadas y no perdidas. Ora para que los irlandeses escuchen otra vez el mensaje de San Patricio y encuentren esperanza en el Señor. España: A fines de 2008, OM se mudó desde Talavera a Narón (Galicia) en el noroeste del país. En Narón no ha habido iglesia ni testimonio cristiano en el pasado. Dios proveyó una propiedad al lado de la nueva iglesia que ha sido iniciada hace tres años por Trevor y Manoli Allan, Líderes de Campo de OM España. Dichas instalaciones albergarán una oficina, un almacén, una cocina, una tienda de segunda mano, un centro de distribución de alimentos y una librería cristiana. Dado que la librería cristiana más cercana en estos momentos está en Madrid (a más de 600 Km. de distancia), el equipo está agradecido de que Dios los llevó allí en el tiempo oportuno. “Encontrarnos en una localidad sin iglesia evangélica, pero con mucha gente necesitada, mientras que en el área alrededor hay muchas iglesias, pero ninguna librería cristiana, nos hace estar agradecidos a Dios”, comentan.

República Checa: OM junto a otras cinco agencias misioneras, fueron anfitriones de un evento llevado a cabo el 7 de febrero en Praga, con el objetivo de presentar el llamado a misiones mundiales. Este fue el primer evento de esta naturaleza en siete años. Cada agencia presentó su trabajo e invitó a los participantes a considerar servir fuera de su país. Wolfgang Binder, de Wicliffe, desafió a los participantes a cambiar el mundo antes de que el mundo los cambie a ellos. A pesar de la relativamente baja asistencia, los participantes estaban animados. El Líder de Campo de OM, Pavel Zoul, dijo que las agencias presentaron el llamado a misiones juntas, como un cuerpo. Ora para que Dios levante checos para ir a misiones alrededor del mundo.

Montenegro: Volker ama utilizar las artes en el ministerio. Mientras alguien cuenta una historia bíblica, él, simultáneamente, dibuja una gran pintura en una pizarra blanca o papel. Esto les encanta a los niños de la etnia roma (o romaní) que se reúnen para escuchar y mirar porque, cuando Volker ha terminado el dibujo, ¡ellos lo colorean! Volker dibuja para los niños semana de por medio en un campamento roma (o romaní) cerca de Bar, donde el equipo de OM ha entablado amistades con los que allí viven. El entusiasmo sube cuando Volker pega una gran hoja de papel al costado de la van y saca sus lápices. Después de que se cuenta la historia bíblica, les reparten crayones a los niños, quienes luchan para pintar sobre la mejor parte del dibujo. Aun así, una pintura hermosa emerge desde el caos, y Volker puede ver que ha entregado un toque de felicidad a los niños. Por favor ora por los niños de la etnia roma y sus familiares quienes aprenden del amor de Jesús a través de palabras, hechos y pinturas.

Polonia: Con temperaturas para congelarse este invierno, las personas en Kurno aceptaron agradecidas la bebida y comida ofrecida por el “Café Móvil” de la iglesia Pentecostal. Algunos nuevos creyentes que han luchado con el alcoholismo por muchos años, iniciaron este ministerio, un testimonio vivo de nuestro Dios que transforma vidas. Ellos comparten el amor de Jesús con los transeúntes y los invitan a la iglesia para la semana siguiente. Ora para que Dios conserve fuertes a estos nuevos creyentes y los proteja de la siempre-presente tentación del alcohol.

El líder de país de OM, Arek Delik, ha sido nombrado Director del Departamento de Misiones de la Unión Pentecostal de Polonia. Dicho departamento es responsable de los proyectos misioneros nacionales y de obreros polacos en el campo, a la vez que promueve las misiones mundiales en las iglesias.

Recursos

El curso Cara a Cara (F2F por sus siglas en inglés) ha sido de bendición para muchos obreros cristianos  que luchan con sus propias debilidades, heridas del pasado y dificultades para relacionarse con otros. El curso es para obreros cristianos que quieren desarrollar su relación con Dios y crecer en el entendimiento de ellos mismos. Es ideal para quienes están en su período de descanso o en una transición, así como para el desarrollo personal. Este año se ofrecen tres cursos:

Gales, Reino Unido	06 – 22 de Noviembre
Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica	18 de Noviembre – 03 de Diciembre

Movimientos misioneros emergentes

Mozambique: Fue el país más pobre del mundo durante la década del ’90. Ahora, el 12 por ciento de su población sufre por el SIDA. Desde 1999, iglesias en todo el país han enviado sus miembros más prometedores a la escuela de entrenamiento misionero de OM por dos años, uno de los únicos programas cristianos disponibles. “Hay muchos creyentes e iglesias evangélicas que podemos movilizar para evangelizar a sus vecinos en las tribus makua y yao”, comentó Antonio Niqueda, Líder de Campo de OM. Los estudios bíblicos y el entrenamiento misionero son puestos en práctica cuando tienen la oportunidad de enseñar en las iglesias y visitar áreas aisladas para compartir el evangelio con personas no alcanzadas. En noviembre, 10 estudiantes se graduaron de este programa. No sólo están evangelizando y comenzando iglesias entre grupos no alcanzados, sino que algunos se han convertido en el pastor principal de sus propias denominaciones y están enviando más personas al ministerio. Por favor ora por Antonio y su equipo mientras están entrenando a más misioneros nacionales para alcanzar a los perdidos, y por las finanzas necesarias para desarrollar este ministerio.

Creencias mundiales

Norte de África: ¿Qué hacen los miembros de OM con la valentía mostrada por los creyentes de trasfondo musulmán que comparten su fe en países “cerrados”? Este es un buen problema, de acuerdo con uno de los obreros que vive allí. Chad* conoció a Agmad*, quien fue expulsado de su hogar después de haber decidido seguir a Jesús. Agmad tiene un fuerte deseo de compartir su nueva fe con cualquiera que quiera oír. “Muchos (nuevos creyentes nacionales) no están al tanto de la persecución oficial, así que estamos experimentando un movimiento de valentía entre ellos, aún a costo del rechazo de su propia familia”, dijo Chad. Agmad, a quien se le ha brindado un lugar para vivir, chatea con personas online y comparte el evangelio abiertamente. Ha creado un sitio Web y se comunica con mucha gente a través de ella. Ora por un avivamiento en todo el Norte de África. Alaba a Dios por la valentía de los nuevos creyentes de trasfondo musulmán. Ora por sabiduría para ellos al saber cómo y con quién compartir. También por protección para ellos y sabiduría para los extranjeros que los están discipulando. *Nombres cambiados.

Punto de Cambio (Reino Unido): La inspección* del programa de entrenamiento ocurrida en el mes de marzo pasado, dio resultados positivos. Gracias por tus oraciones. No recibiremos el informe definitivo hasta que otro equipo de OM en el Reino Unido sea inspeccionado también, lo cual ocurrirá el mes próximo. A esta altura estamos anticipando buenos resultados. En los ’90 nuestro equipo comenzó a alcanzar árabe-parlantes en el centro de Londres. Lo cual se ha expandido ahora a otros lugares en el Norte de África, Medio Oriente, Centro y Este de Asia, incluyendo reuniones dominicales en árabe e inglés, pequeños grupos de estudio bíblico, cenas mensuales de camaradería, visitas, un grupo de padres y niños, y evangelismo callejero. Por favor ora para que esto sea un testimonio para el mundo alrededor de nosotros y cause un impacto en Su reino.

Muchos de quienes asisten son refugiados o están buscando asilo. A menudo no tienen residencia permanente o un lugar donde vivir, mientras sus familias continúan en sus países de origen. Por favor ora por su crecimiento espiritual continuo y por el compañerismo con otros creyentes.

Una joven se acercó a una mesa de libros y Serena* le ofreció un DVD gratis acerca de Jesús. Jasmine*, una joven del Golfo Pérsico, hizo como si no hubiera oído y siguió buscando otros libros. Serena le repitió la pregunta y notó que Jasmine le leía los labios, puesto que es sorda. Ella tomó la literatura y el DVD y comenzó a hurgar dentro de su bolso. Encontró su teléfono y escribió un mensaje en él: “¿es Él realmente el hijo de Dios?” Serena la miró y señaló el nombre Jesús en el DVD. “Si”, le dijo asintiendo con la cabeza, “Él es”.

Serena se ha encontrado con Jasmine en el café local para comunicarse en forma escrita y compartir de Jesús y la fe cristiana con ella. Jasmine está interesada en reunirse semanalmente para aprender más acerca de la Biblia. Aunque no puede oír, ¡espiritualmente ella tiene un deseo y un oído dispuesto a oír la voz del Dios vivo! *Nombres cambiados.

Sur de Asia: En Bangladesh, seis personas vinieron a la fe durante el mes pasado en una misma área. Esperamos desarrollar programas de entrenamiento de liderazgo y realizar un campamento de capacitación en Abril. Estamos buscando el lugar adecuado para realizarlo y también las personas correctas para que vayan.

En Pakistán, el equipo masculino itinerante ha visitado diferentes áreas para tomar reuniones de iglesias, distribuir literatura y proyectar películas. Durante un programa en un parque, un hermano dijo que “conocí a un creyente nacional y le regalé literatura, el muchacho lo aceptó  felizmente y comentó que había esperado ese libro por mucho tiempo. Como no tenía más copias, le prometí que le llevaría más literatura la próxima vez que nos encontremos.”

El equipo femenino estaba muy animado durante la Navidad cuando entregaron tarjetas a otras damas en una aldea donde hay mucha actividad demoníaca. Aunque hay una pequeña iglesia, la mayoría sólo asiste para las grandes celebraciones. Una señorita que conocieron estaba a punto de casarse. Le explicaron lo bueno que es comenzar la vida matrimonial teniendo una relación con Dios, y hablaron sobre las cualidades de una vida buena. La señorita comenzó una relación con Él allí mismo, en ese mismo momento. Las damas del equipo esperan que su nueva vida sea fructífera y que todo su hogar sea bendecido.

Otra señorita visitada por el equipo ha perdido sus cuatro hermanos quienes han muerto en los últimos cuatro años el mismo día del mismo mes. Ella está muy asustada por esta circunstancia. El equipo le explicó que sólo Dios puede ayudarla a ella y a su familia a través de estos episodios demoníacos. No son temas fáciles para el equipo, y necesitan mucha sabiduría y protección.

Turquía: El esposo de Serpil está en prisión por asesinato. Ella tiene mucho odio y a menudo se muestra muy crítica hacia Anna en las reuniones de té. Mientras estaba en Alemania, Anna sintió de parte del Señor, comprar una loción y dársela como regalo a Serpil. Cuando se lo dio, Serpil estalló en lágrimas y dijo: “Estoy tan sola. La gente va a las peregrinaciones musulmanas y nunca piensa en traerme algo. Tú eres cristiana y aún así, me trajiste un regalo.” Ora para que Serpil reciba en su corazón el regalo más grande de Amor.

Tayikistán: “¿Son iraníes o afganos?” Nos pregunta la gente cuando nos oyen hablar tayik con acento extranjero. Me detengo a charlar antes de ir al bazar, con un veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial que tiene 87 años de edad. Nos sentamos al sol y conversamos. Camino a mi trabajo, juego fútbol con dos niños de 10 años, su abuela es rusa y su papá me ha invitado a tomar te. Esta mañana cumplí con un azor (40 días de duelo) por un vecino que murió hace poco. Los gemidos y gritos de los hombres nos despiertan a las 6:00 cada mañana. Un anciano del vecindario que vive junto a nosotros nos ha invitado para cenar esta semana. Él perdió su trabajo en la fábrica de seda el mismo día que emplearon a 1100 personas. Por favor ora para que algunos de estos contactos se conviertan en buenas relaciones y en frutos duraderos.

En una entrevista para personal, Gul dijo: “por favor oren para que mi esposo me permita trabajar con ustedes. Es un largo camino desde casa y probablemente me tenga que levantar a las 4:00 am para realizar las tareas de la casa antes de venir, pero realmente quiero trabajar aquí. El año pasado cuando asistí al seminario que dieron, sentí que había un fuego real ardiendo en este lugar. Realmente quiero trabajar en este proyecto.”

El gerente cristiano local y yo respondimos: “Si, hay un fuego aquí: el amor de Dios ardiendo en nuestros corazones.” Luego de algunos días oímos que su esposo le dio permiso para que trabajara con nosotros. Por favor ora por Gul y por otros colegas tayik, para que ellos oigan más acerca de este fuego.

Ayuda y desarrollo

Sudán: Noticias de Operación Misericordia, una organización asociada a OM.

El programa de Entrenamiento Vocacional permite estudiar carpintería, metalúrgica, mecánica de automóvil y agricultura. Desde antes de Navidad está funcionando mucho mejor puesto que un bazar comenzó a vender lo que producimos. Ya tenemos muchos pedidos y esperamos que lleguen aún más para la carpintería y la metalúrgica. No hay muchos que traigan sus automóviles para reparar, pero el profesor ha estado ocupado en enseñarles a los muchachos a conducir y hacer otros trabajos. El profesor de agricultura sembró en la granja con los chicos y ahora están esperando para comer lo que han producido.

Nuestra mayor necesidad es por un proyecto de blockes (ladrillos). Ora por los fondos necesarios para la maquinaria y los costos de puesta en marcha; también para encontrar a la gente necesaria para el proyecto. Necesitamos una persona extranjera que haga un compromiso por un año para asegurar un buen mercado para los blockes y para entrenar a la gente local. Emplearemos a los muchachos que se gradúen de nuestros centros como obreros, pero necesitamos alguien experimentado en la construcción para liderar el proyecto. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos a causar un impacto en la vida de muchos!

Iniciativas pioneras

Chile: Hal y Sandra Henson viven en Santiago y son pioneros en realizar el primer viaje misionero de OM llamado La Próxima Aventura. Este programa de tres semanas de duración, está pensado para personas retiradas o jubiladas. Se admiten personas mayores de 45 años de edad. Del 7 al 28 de marzo cuatro participantes de Inglaterra, Suiza y los Estados Unidos participarán de este programa innovador que combina paseos por lindos paisajes con observar el trasfondo espiritual del país, así como el evangelismo. Los Henson, que también son retirados, explican: “Es un viaje exploratorio extraordinario donde le mostramos a las personas lo que está pasando aquí, para que puedan ver cómo pueden involucrarse en misiones. El programa incluye el Seminario de Dirección de la Vida que se enfoca en los dones espirituales y en la cosmovisión bíblica. ¡Los hombres y las mujeres necesitan ver cómo pueden ser utilizados por Dios en este y otros países!” Ora para que Dios utilice los equipos de La Próxima Aventura para guiar a las personas retiradas a involucrarse en misiones.

Barcos

Logos Hope: Es emocionante finalmente dar la bienvenida a cientos de personas al barco cada día. Al mismo tiempo, van apareciendo desafíos que amenazan nuestros recursos. Nos falta personal en varias áreas claves de ministerio. Hay muchas vacantes para jóvenes que se nos unan este año. Aún cuando el barco tiene toda la certificación para funcionar, hay tres proyectos prioritarios: (1) una planta de potabilización de agua (que toma agua del mar y la vuelve potable) necesaria antes de que el barco haga viajes largos; (2) un sistema para mejorar la eficiencia en el consumo de combustible, cuya inversión se recuperará con lo que se ahorre en combustible en un año; y (3) terminar el Teatro Hope, el principal auditorio a bordo.

Una vez más, en nombre de los más de 5400 obreros de 90 países trabajando en más de 110 países, muchas gracias por tus oraciones y apoyo.

La Pureza y el Evangelio

Por muchos años he entendido que el aspecto del evangelio que trata el pedón de la culpa no se lo percibe como relevante en muchas culturas, donde la gente piensa no en términos de culpa y justicia, sino en términos de vergüenza y honor. Al comunicar el evangelio a ellos, es vital mostrarles que Jesús murió en la cruz no sólo para perdonar la paga de nuestra culpa, sino también para cubrir la desgracia de nuestra vergüenza.

Recientemente, sin embargo, me di cuenta de algo muy importante para los que están ministrando entre musulmanes… y quizás, entre otras personas también.

La contaminación diaria

Recuerdo hace mucho tiempo atrás un viaje en autobús en Turquía durante el cual tuve la oportunidad de escuchar a dos musulmanas debatir. Dos jovencitas estaban sentadas detrás de mí, una de ellas con la cabeza cubierta, demostrando que era una musulmana devota, y la otra, más secular, con la cabeza descubierta. La primera de ellas estaba exaltando las muchas ventajas de ser una musulmana piadosa. Escuché a escondidas con interés por oír lo que esta joven conservadora pensaba que serían las atracciones principales del Islam. “Nuestra religión te enseña la manera correcta de ir al baño. Al entrar al lugar sucio, lo haces con el pie izquierdo primero, y al salir, con el derecho primero. Así te conservas pura.”

Mi reacción en ese momento fue de reírme por la vanidad del quisquilloso legalismo. Desde entonces, sin embargo, me he dado cuenta que la pureza y la contaminación son asuntos muy importantes que gobiernan la vida de la mayoría de los musulmanes. Más importante aún, he llegado a entender que Jesús murió no sólo para lidiar con nuestra culpa y nuestra vergüenza, sino también para limpiarnos profundamente de nuestra contaminación.

Mantenerse limpio, al estilo Levítico

Largas porciones de las enseñanzas del Islam explican cómo limpiarse y mantenerse limpio. Cada encuentro sexual debe estar seguido de una inmersión total en agua. Las oraciones deben estar precedidas por abluciones rituales y hay extensas enseñanzas de lo que viola el estado de pureza, lo cual invalida las oraciones. La mayoría está de acuerdo que un bostezo o un eructo significan que hay que lavarse otra vez antes de poder orar. Los musulmanes pasan gran parte de sus vidas en un estado de impureza ritual.

Mientras esto podría parecer extraño para los occidentales y la gente con trasfondo cristiano, sería muy familiar para el escritor de Levítico, un libro que tendemos a saltearnos. Aquí hay comidas, secreciones, enfermedades que causan impureza ritual, así como los cuerpos muertos. Dichas impurezas excluyen al adorador del santuario, y sólo pueden ser sacadas con lavado y sacrificio. En ese tiempo, estas órdenes divinas claramente tenían un gran valor para entrenar la conciencia de Israel para distinguir entre lo limpio y lo inmundo; para entender lo santo, y para mantenerlos separados de las naciones contaminadas de su alrededor (Levítico 11:43-47).

La pureza de Jesús limpia la contaminación

Sin embargo, Jesús reinterpretó radical y fundamentalmente la legislación mosaica. Ya no es lo que entra en el cuerpo lo que contamina, sino lo que sale del corazón. En Marcos 7:21,22 Él enseña que “la avaricia, la maldad, el engaño, el libertinaje” es lo que necesitamos evitar con la misma repulsión y asco que antes causaban un cerdo o un leproso.

En Marcos 5:25 en adelante, una mujer impura, a causa de tener flujo de sangre, tocó a Jesús. La impureza de ella debía volverlo impuro a Él. No obstante, Jesús es tan santo que el resultado normal de ese toque se revierte: en vez de contaminarse Él, ¡la mujer es purificada! Jesús quita la impureza. Hebreos 9:11-14 expone el significado ceremonial de la cruz. Nos enseña que sólo “la sangre de Cristo puede limpiar nuestras conciencias de las obras que conducen a la muerte.”

La atracción de la purificación

Durante un viaje reciente a Kenia, escuché acerca de un movimiento de varios miles de musulmanes que vinieron a la fe en isa Al Masih (Jesús el Mesías). ¿Qué los atrajo a Él? Jesús, descubrieron ellos, puede purificarlos por su sangre… y purificar la cultura de ellos a través de su Palabra.

Debemos entender por la Escritura y en la cultura donde servimos, la importancia de tratar la contaminación. Creo que podría ser otra poderosa forma de presentar el evangelio a los musulmanes, y también para otros para los cuales los ritos de purificación son un asunto importante.
