Dear partners in prayer,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus. I am dictating this on the eve of our International Executive Committee meetings. Our Area Coordinators and female leaders from around the world come together three or four times a year for prayer and discussion about the ministry - always an extremely important time. I would certainly appreciate your prayers for the meetings themselves and for the skill to implement decisions taken during these days. There's quite a bit of movement in our International Executive Committee with Area Coordinators moving on to new ministries and new Coordinators moving in; so again your prayers for effective transition would be appreciated.

Emerging mission movements

Zimbabwe: Mike vanVuuren reports that LIFE Development training for forty church leaders of Siabuwa was enthusiastically received. "Each participant must bear some of the cost to evidence their commitment. Thirty paid in kind rather than cash. For the joy of insisting on payments we now have 30 live rural chickens living in our cash box! How do you explain that to your bookkeeper?" The training moved to Banket with 23 church leaders. The next course is scheduled for 6 July (nine courses over the next three years). Fewer than ten percent of church leaders have any formal theological training. Pray for Mike's wife Linda who faces continued health struggles. Basic necessities in the country are nearly non-existent and prohibitively expensive.
 

Vicky Graham's Mobile Medical Clinic: The end of the rainy season has seen a massive increase in malaria infections and a cholera outbreak. Vicky, working on her own, treats close to 150 to 200 patients daily for everything from malaria to cholera, HIV/AIDS infections, severe burns, and a host of malnutrition-related illnesses. Working often late into the night, she covers seven clinics weekly which puts a huge physical load on her, but she continues pressing on.

South Africa: The Gauteng Challenge outreach will take place from 29 June - 11 July. Pray urgently for participants and host churches to commit as the registration deadline looms. Pray for Heather, Michael and Bonny doing the preparation and building teams. The AIDS Hope team reaches students in three different primary schools in Gauteng. Please pray for the challenges of language difficulties, behavioural problems, traumatised children, and the difficult subjects they discuss.

Zambia: Anthony focuses on the village of Tongwa, which means 'hidden' or 'isolated'; for many years the people have been isolated from the Gospel and rife with prostitution, polygamy, early childhood marriages, hatred, drunkenness, witchcraft, and idolatry. Two years ago Lewis and Muhandu preached the Gospel in Tongwa, and God has been transforming lives and building His church there which is growing spiritually and numerically. Pray for a continued harvest as they disciple this church.

Angola: Armando asked for help in freeing his car from mud. The team men got their own vehicle stuck in helping him. They returned for a tractor - which also got stuck! Eventually they returned to the base with all the vehicles in tow. Armando stayed for the discipleship programme and was touched by God, confessing his sins and expressing a desire to know more about God. An OMer invited him to visit whenever he is in town. He later returned with a gift of corn. Pray for Armando in his new faith and for more opportunities like this for the team.

Papua New Guinea: Nineteen young people from all over the country attended four weeks of intensive orientation training that equips new recruits. The training was run by OM staff, returning missionaries and people from other groups. The participants are now raising prayer and financial support with the goal of joining different fields early next year. PNGers now serve in South Asia, South Africa and on Asia Challenge Teams in Thailand. Pray for the new recruits in raising prayer and financial support.

World faiths

Bangladesh: One team has been working for seven years, during which time quite a few men have trusted Christ, and meet in a central location a few times a month for teaching and encouragement. Six women took a public step of faith in March. They need teaching; however, village women do not normally travel very far from home, so we hope that God will enable them to get what they need for their spiritual growth.

M*, a former team member, is planning to coordinate the women's office skill training programme. Her visa application needs to be quickly processed and the necessary permissions granted, to enable her to be here by the summer.

Pakistan: The men's team has been sharing and distributing literature and has made friends. They were encouraged by those in the bazaar who said: "You are doing good work. Most of the youth at this age are involved in drugs and political activities, but you are doing God's work." They also gave out free literature during the celebrations of the prophet's birthday.

The men's travelling team had good experiences recently: "During my journey, I shared literature with passengers. I went into a library and asked the librarian if I could donate ten copies of the Gospels to the library. He gave his approval, and they can now be found on the shelves, waiting for people to read them!"

A brother shared, "I was in a bazaar, introducing books to people but most refused, as they were not literate. In one shop, the owner showed interest in the Gospel packet, but he said "If I find anything in it that talks about Jesus being the Son of God, I?ll beat you." I said that I was ready to be beaten. When a customer heard this, he was so impressed that he came over to see what books I had, and took a book about Jesus from me."

Thailand: Bill* and Mary* work in the northeast among the unreached Isan people: "I went to see a nearby Christian school. I met a teacher who was teaching the Grade Six children about worshipping rain. I told the Director of the school, 'I am a missionary and I missed the chapter on worshiping rain, but I know about worshipping the Creator of rain'. The school has 70 teachers of whom over half are Buddhist; they teach the Buddhist tradition by law. I asked a Buddhist teacher and she found a very old and dirty Gideons' Bible.

"As a certified English teacher, I thought bilingual Bibles would be great, but they were very expensive. I wrote to the Director of the Bible society who offered a much better price. In my prayer letters I had mentioned my need, but not finances. Within a week, the money was in and I got 150 Bibles. I began to teach the following day, alongside a teacher who is no longer Buddhist but attending church. I gave a new Bible to the Buddhist teacher who had brought me the old Gideons' Bible and she broke down in tears. I continue to teach the Bible to the students each week and have seen some follow Christ."

Israel: OM has realised the great potential for reaching native Israelis with the Gospel - outside ofIsrael! We are looking at setting up an initial team of 3-10 people that would train in Israel and then go to the nations to seek the lost sheep of the house of Israel and all other lost souls on the way in places such as Nepal, India, Thailand and the Andean nations of South America, as well as world cities such as London, Amsterdam and New York. Please pray for this new ministry (I2N: Israel to the Nations) which we strongly believe is of the Lord. Consider joining yourself or sending your best young people. Pray for the team leader on his first line up trip, and for people to join this new initiative in 2010.

A group of nine believers brought the light and love of Jesus into the darkness of the Boombamela New Age Festival, an all-night beach party attended by thousands. The group held many conversations, opening the Tanach (OT) to read 'the forbidden chapter', Isaiah 53. Despite widespread opposition or indifference, some young people eagerly listened to the Gospel, asked questions, even hugged the team. God saved two young men from the Negev desert, and the team is visiting and encouraging them in their new faith. Pray for more fruit from conversations and for these young men!

Europe

Portugal: Thousands of pilgrims annually travel to the Catholic sanctuary of Fátima, built where, in 1917, three children claimed to have seen Mary. Pilgrims believe that their sacrificial offerings will give them favour before God. Over the years, OM teams have provided drinks, and a chance to rest and chat for many visitors. One team member reports, "It was great to have the opportunity to share the freedom and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ. We gave out 1,000 bottles of water and 3,000 pieces of literature. My heart was heavy to see so many lost without God and blinded by idolatry. We plan to send a team to reach pilgrims at Fátima next May as well."

Albania: Aurora remembers the day God changed her life at 17: her 12-year-old brother had gone to a mission event and her upset father didn't want his son to listen to Christian nonsense, sending Aurora to fetch him. When she arrived, she was fascinated by the programme and quickly forgot about her brother. She started attending student Bible studies and now desires to do professional translations that will speak into the lives of young people. While editing 'The Bondage Breaker' by Neil Anderson, God revealed things in her own life, and freed her from lies she had believed. Albanians are thankful for this book which tackles topics that the Church avoids.

France: A team of seven helped the Protestant Evangelical Church of Montargis bring the Good News to their city and the surrounding towns. Michael, a Kenyan/German participant, summed it up, "I gained a deepening burden for the spiritual state of Europe as a whole, influenced by secular humanism, individualism and materialism which together make the hearts of locals and immigrants alike impervious to the simple truths of the Gospel. My intercessory prayer is more specific as I better understand the real personal needs people have in this region. May God open our eyes to the spiritual need of Europe and increase our prayer!"

Norway: For three years, OM and other local organisations and churches have organised prayer times and training to share Christ with neighbours and colleagues. Many refugees and immigrants are Christians and have formed ethnic churches; few integrate into Norwegian churches. OM wanted these groups to meet as sisters and brothers in Christ, and approached the ethnic fellowships about hosting an international dinner on Ascension Day (21 May) for 200 people. Each group brought ethnic food to the dinner which was primarily to build relationships between Norwegian and foreign Christians. With Norway becoming a more post-Christian nation, OM hopes that the influx of Christians from other parts of the world will be one way to make God known. Pray for lasting fruit from this and similar events.

UK: Matthias, 24, joined the Community Encounter programme at OM Lifehope and was stretched: "I was challenged to preach one Sunday," said Matthias. "I had never had the opportunity to do this in Switzerland, and there I was preaching in English! I was encouraged by the openness of the people in the neighbourhood, and enjoyed visiting their homes, listening to their problems and sharing my faith." He worked with people from many different cultures who thought and acted differently and he learned to trust God in many different situations. "I enjoyed the sessions about finding God's will and learning about other religions. I'm now going back to Switzerland knowing that missions is part of God's plan for my life."

Ships

Logos Hope: "Your ship has already started work here: I just met my neighbour living in this apartment block for the first time," a local woman told OM Ireland Director Mike Mullins after the Logos Hope's arrival to Dublin, Ireland. "They are all asking 'What's this all about'" he said. "All the people are watching every move that we make from their apartments and office buildings." Mike invited crewmembers to celebrate their cultures, and demonstrate that there is unity in diversity, while serving together to impact Dublin with a message of hope in God.

India

Chandpa, from a Dalit background, is married with two children. Two years ago, her entire family was living in dire poverty. Her husband's meagre income as a daily-wage construction worker was insufficient. Chandpa learned about the Dalit Education Centre's Self Help Group (SHG) and became a member. She learned how a SHG functioned, proactively participated in its activities, and was soon unanimously elected as its president. In 2008, Chandpa received a loan from the SHG and bought a three-wheeled taxi. Her husband drove the taxi, earned a better income and within nine months repaid the loan. In 2009, Chandpa used another loan to start a small embroidery store. Together, she and her husband are earning a better income and recently bought a small house. The children are thrilled to now have a place to call their own. Chandpa says the SHG has given her and her family a life they could have never before imagined.

Pioneering initiatives

Nepal: Over two days, the team held a medical camp in two different slums, and saw 400 patients. It was a great opportunity to serve the physical and medical needs of the destitute, and to share about God through dramas, teachings, personal chats, and tracts. There was a drama team, a children's team, a team for keeping order, and a team for medical work. There were also people 'in between' who held conversations and helped wherever needed.

Two long-termers on Asia Challenge Teams (ACT) are leaving: one on sabbatical, and the other returning home. This leaves a big gap, as visas for short-termers to join this team are extremely difficult to obtain. Pray that God would grant us favour in obtaining permission for our short-termers to enter ACT locations.

The ACT has finished organising Vacational Bible School (VBS): half-days of activities and games, songs and Bible stories, for 7 - 14 year olds. The team is now involved with some 40 young people coming along to the youth camp, which has followed fast after the VBS.

One team is working with a national team by visiting local churches, sharing God's message, encouraging believers to reach out to their neighbours, and offering support in church outreach programmes. They have trained 60+ students in outreach in three small groups that went into the community during May.

Sportslink Hungary: Since signing a contract with the local authorities for a 25-year free lease, we have been building and developing our baseball and softball facilities at a field near the OM office. All labour has been provided by the players, team members and teams of volunteers; over $7000 US has been donated to help build the facility, soon to become one of the best baseball complexes in the country. OMer Terry Lingenhoel has been elected to the executive board of the Hungarian Baseball Federation, responsible for Youth Development. Our field hosted national team tryouts for Cadets (13-15) and Juniors (16-18). Terry is also head coach for local teams in Erd.

From May 11-15, Sportslink Hungary hosted four FCA American football coaches to discuss ministry and partnership. The Hungarian American Football Association is excited about FCA's interest in partnering with them. Sportslink will host a training camp for the Hungarian National Cadet and Junior teams in July. Pray for opportunities to share Christ with the top baseball players in the country. We continue to raise funds and make improvements on the baseball complex in Erd. Pray for this facility to be used by God to reach our city and the baseball community with the Gospel. June 20 will be an evangelist Family Sports Day in Budapest. Pray for the planning and that those who attend will hear and understand the Gospel. Pray for the development of partnership with Sportslink and FCA and the Hungarian American Football League (www.mafl.hu).

Think Again
Buried treasure, untapped talent

As Susan Boyle walked on stage on 11 April, the judges and audience of ITV's 'Britain's Got Talent' show were unimpressed; some were open in their derision. Conditioned by society and the media, they - and, let's admit it, most of us - couldn't imagine that the overweight, middle-aged woman standing awkwardly at centre stage would get more than a few lines into her song before being cut off as a failure. Hardly, though, had the first rich phrase of 'I dreamed a dream' flowed from her mouth before judges, the live audience, and (later) millions of YouTube viewers realized that this woman had a voice worthy of being heard by the Queen.(1)

Buried treasure

In his recent book, 'Outliers',(2) Malcolm Gladwell delineates the incredible scope of human talent that lies unrecognized and undeveloped at an enormous loss for society. At times, as in Susan Boyle's case, our prejudices relate expected outward appearance to skill. In other cases, the problem is systemic. Too often arbitrary choices limit opportunity to develop and contribute.

Most top Canadian hockey players have birthdays very early in the year. Being born in January or February, Gladwell says, does not make you a better hockey player. However, since age groups for junior leagues are clustered by calendar year, from the time they begin at age six, boys born between January and March tend to be a little bit bigger and faster than teammates born in June, and a lot bigger and faster than teammates born in November or December. As a result, those born early in the year from their first school year through adolescence tend to get more attention, more coaching, and more ice time - and are more likely to develop into top-tier players than those born toward the end of the year.

Talent hidden by expectations?

We aren't competing in a hockey league or on a reality TV talent show, but these stories raise questions for OM, and in general for the Church in mission. The first has to do with expectations and prejudice. Jill Briscoe observed that when Samuel first met David, he saw only a boy. Jesse looked at his son and saw only a boy. Goliath looked at his opponent and - fatal mistake - saw only a boy. But God saw the king in the boy.

If we were part of a reality TV show called 'OM's got talent' I wonder how many of us would hear the judges say, as they did to Susan Boyle, "Wow! When you walked on stage [10 or 20 or 30 years ago,] we didn't expect anything like this from you!" And what of those who now are walking on OM's stage for the first time? Do we only see the 'boy' or the 'girl' or does each one get a fair chance? Do we prematurely limit their potential because of conventional expectations, our prejudices making us unable to see the treasure God has hidden inside?

Talent tapped by opportunity

The second question has to do with opportunity. Gladwell suggests creating two entry points to junior hockey leagues, with separate teams for kids born in the second half of the year. With double the opportunity, twice as many Canadians will be able to play world-class hockey. Not every kid has the potential to become a star. But increased opportunity, he says, will unlock vast treasures of talent that otherwise remains buried and undeveloped.

Where do we need to open up opportunities to intentionally give a chance for otherwise untapped talent? Our Joshua Initiative exists "to see OM as a mission that identifies people's leadership potential at the earliest possible stage and develops them to the fullest." Who among us needs to intentionally make more space for others, especially younger OMers, so that they can begin to shine? Beyond leadership, what other God-given gifts lies hidden within OM and in our churches, untapped by opportunity: art, music, service, teaching, preaching, evangelism, administration?

Singing for our King

I hope that Susan Boyle eventually will sing before the Queen. Yet no matter how much talent is discovered, in such competitions only one person wins and receives that honour.

In the Church and in OM, though, there is no single winner. The more talent and gifts uncovered and linked to opportunity, the better! We all can sing, together, not for ourselves but for the glory of the Eternal King.

Queridos amigos de oración,

Saludos en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesús. Estoy dictando estas líneas en la víspera de nuestras reuniones del Comité Ejecutivo Internacional. Nuestros Coordinadores de Área y algunos líderes de alrededor del mundo se reúnen tres o cuatro veces al año para orar y debatir acerca del ministerio. Siempre este es un tiempo extremadamente importante. Apreciaría mucho sus oraciones por las reuniones y por la capacidad para implementar las decisiones que se tomen en estos días. Tenemos algunos cambios en el Comité Ejecutivo Internacional. Algunos Coordinadores de Área se mudan a otros ministerios y son reemplazados por nuevos Coordinadores, por lo tanto necesitamos de tus oraciones para que las transiciones sean efectivas.

Movimientos misioneros emergentes

Zimbawe: Mike vanVuuren informó que el entrenamiento de Desarrollo de VIDA fue recibido con mucho entusiasmo por los cuarenta líderes de iglesias de Siabuwa. “Cada participante debía asumir una parte del costo como evidencia de su compromiso. Treinta pagaron en especias en lugar de efectivo. ¡Así que ahora tenemos 30 pollos viviendo en nuestra caja chica! ¿Cómo le explicamos esto a nuestro contador?” El siguiente entrenamiento fue en Banket con 23 participantes. El próximo curso se dictará desde el 6 de Julio (hay nueve cursos programados para los próximos tres años). Menos del diez por ciento de los líderes de iglesias tienen algún tipo de entrenamiento formal en teología. Ora por la esposa de Mike, Linda que enfrenta problemas de salud continuamente. Hay cosas básicamente necesarias en el país que no se encuentran y las que sí, son extremadamente costosas.

Clínica Médica Móvil de Vicky Graham: Al final de la estación lluviosa se han incrementado los casos de malaria y cólera. Vicky, quien trabaja sola, trata cerca de 150 a 200 pacientes por día que llegan con enfermedades que van de la malaria al cólera, infecciones provocadas por VIH/SIDA, quemaduras graves, y una gran cantidad de enfermedades provocadas por la desnutrición. Trabajando hasta tarde en la noche, ella cubre siete clínicas semanalmente, lo cual es una enorme carga física para ella. Pero ella sigue adelante.

Sur de África: La campaña Desafío Gauteng se realizará del 29 de junio al 11 de Julio. Ora urgente por los participantes y las iglesias que los recibirán, para que se inscriban antes de la fecha límite que se avecina. Ora por Heather, Michael y Bonny durante la preparación y armado de equipos. El equipo de SIDA trabaja entre estudiantes de tres escuelas primarias en Gauteng. Volvieron a la base por el Unimog y un tractor para sacar al automóvil y la Land Rover del barro. Pronto, el Unimog también quedó atascado. Luego de un rato pudieron sacar todos los vehículos con el tractor. Armando se quedó durante un programa de discipulado y fue tocado por Dios. Con lágrimas en los ojos confesó sus pecados y expresó su deseo de conocer más de Dios. Se fue y unos minutos más tarde regresó con un regalo para bendecir al equipo. Por favor ora por Armando y su nueva fe. Ora por el equipo de OM en Angola y por más oportunidades como esta.

Papúa Nueva Guinea: Diecinueve jóvenes de todo el país asistieron a un entrenamiento de orientación que equipa a los candidatos antes de unirse a OM. El entrenamiento fue llevado a cabo por el personal de OM, junto a misioneros que estaban de regreso y diferentes personas de otros ministerios. Los participantes ya están levantando apoyo en oración y económico. Algunos papuanos están sirviendo ahora en el Sur de Asia, el Sur de África y en los Equipos de Desafío en Asia en Tailandia. Por favor ora por los nuevos candidatos que están levantando oraciones y apoyo económico. Por favor ora por el personal de OM Papúa Nueva Guinea.

Creencias mundiales

Bangladesh: Un equipo ha estado trabajando aquí por siete años, en ese tiempo muy pocos hombres han confiado en Cristo, los cuales se reúnen en un lugar céntrico algunas veces al mes para recibir enseñanza y ánimo. Seis mujeres tomaron un paso de fe en Marzo. Ellas necesitan enseñanza. Las mujeres aldeanas no viajan lejos del hogar, así que esperamos que Dios les provea lo que necesitan para su crecimiento espiritual.

M*, una ex miembro del equipo, está planeando coordinar el programa femenino de entrenamiento de oficios. Ella ha solicitado visa para venir en el verano (hemisferio norte) y este trámite debe ser resuelto rápidamente.

Pakistán: El equipo masculino ha compartido y distribuido literatura y ha hecho nuevos amigos. Se animaron cuando algunos en el mercado dijeron: “Están haciendo un buen trabajo. La mayoría de los jóvenes de la edad de ustedes están en la droga o involucrados en actividades políticas, pero ustedes están trabajando para Dios.” También estuvieron distribuyendo literatura durante la celebración del nacimiento del profeta.

El equipo itinerante masculino ha tenido buenas experiencias últimamente: “Durante mi viaje, distribuí literatura a los pasajeros. Entré a una biblioteca y le pregunté al encargado si podía donar diez copias del nuevo testamento para la biblioteca. Él estuvo de acuerdo y ahora los libros pueden ser encontrados en los estantes, ¡esperando por personas que los lean!”

Un hermano compartió que “estuve en un mercado, presentando libros a las personas pero la mayoría los rechazaba, porque eran analfabetos. En un negocio, el dueño mostró interés por el paquete del evangelio, pero dijo: ‘Si encuentro algo aquí que diga que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, te pego’. Le dije que estaba listo para recibir el golpe. Cuando un cliente escuchó esto, se impresionó tanto que vino a ver qué libros tenía, le di un libro que habla acerca de Jesús.”

Tailandia: Bill* y Mary* trabajan en el noreste del país con el grupo no alcanzado Isan. Bill* compartio: “Fui a visitar una escuela cristiana cercana. Me encontré con un maestro que estaba enseñando a niños de sexto grado acerca de la adoración a la lluvia. Le dije al director: ‘soy misionero y me perdí el capítulo sobre adorar la lluvia, pero conozco acerca de la adoración al Creador de la lluvia.’ La escuela tiene 70 maestros y más de la mitad de ellos son budistas, los cuales enseñan las tradiciones budistas por ley. Le pedí a una maestra budista y ella encontró una vieja y sucia Biblia de los Gedeones.

“Como maestro certificado de inglés, pensé que una Biblia bilingüe sería genial, pero son muy caras. Le escribí al director de la Sociedad Bíblica quien me ofreció un precio mucho mejor. Mencioné mi necesidad en mi carta de oración, pero no hubo donaciones. En una semana tuve el dinero y compré 150 Biblias. Comencé a enseñar al día siguiente, junto con un maestro que dejó de ser budista y ahora asiste a una iglesia. Le di una nueva Biblia a la maestra que me trajo la vieja Biblia de los Gedeones y ella comenzó a llorar. Israel: OM ha encontrado que hay un gran potencial en alcanzar israelitas con el evangelio afuera de Israel. El equipo busca crear un grupo inicial de 3 a 10 personas que serán entrenadas en Israel y luego irán a diferentes naciones para buscar a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel y también otras almas perdidas en lugares como Nepal, India, Tailandia y la Región Andina de Sudamérica; y también algunas ciudades tales como Londres, Ámsterdam y Nueva York. Por favor ora por esta iniciativa de OM Israel. El equipo cree firmemente que este es un trabajo liderado por el Señor. Ora también por el líder del equipo que está planificando el primer viaje de preparación y por gente dispuesta a unirse a esta iniciativa en 2010.

Un grupo de 9 creyentes israelíes llevaron la luz y el amor de Jesús a la oscuridad del Festival de Nueva Era Boombamela. Este evento es básicamente una fiesta hippie/reggae en la playa que dura toda la noche y donde asisten miles de personas. Nuestros hermanos tuvieron muchas conversaciones, con la Tenach (El Antiguo Testamento) en la mano para compartir sobre el “capítulo prohibido” de Isaías 53. La mayoría simplemente ignoró a los creyentes, pero otros jóvenes escucharon atentamente el evangelio, hicieron preguntas, y hasta los abrazaron. Dios obró en la salvación de dos jóvenes del desierto del Negev, y el equipo está enviando obreros para que los visiten y los animen en su nueva fe. ¡Por favor ora por más frutos de estas conversiones y por nuestros amigos en el Negev!

Europa

Portugal: Miles de peregrinos llegan anualmente al santuario católico de Fátima, que fue construido en 1917 cuando tres niños dijeron haber visto a María. Los peregrinos creen que sus ofrendas sacrificiales les darán el favor de Dios. A través de los años, equipos de OM les han dado algo de beber y han podido conversar con muchos visitantes. Un miembro de un equipo dijo: “Fue muy bueno tener la oportunidad de compartir de la libertad y el perdón encontrados en Jesucristo. Distribuimos 1000 botellas de agua y 3000 piezas de literatura. Me pesaba en el corazón ver a tantos perdidos sin Dios, cegados por la idolatría. Planeamos enviar un equipo para alcanzar a los peregrinos de Fátima el próximo año también.”

Albania: Aurora recuerda el día en que Dios cambió su vida cuando tenía 17 años: su hermano de 12 años había ido a un evento misionero y su disgustado padre que no quería que su hijo escuchara las tonterías cristianas envió a Aurora a traer a su hermano. Cuando ella llegó, fue fascinada por el programa y pronto se olvidó de su hermano. Comenzó a asistir a estudios bíblicos y ahora quiere hacer traducciones profesionales para hablar a las vidas de los jóvenes. Editando el libro “Rompiendo las Cadenas” de Neil Anderson, Dios le mostró cosas en su propia vida y la liberó de las mentiras que había creído. Los albaneses están agradecidos por este libro que trata temas que la iglesia esquiva.

Francia: Un equipo de siete personas colaboró con la Iglesia Evangélica Protestante de Montargis para llevar las Buenas Nuevas a su ciudad y pueblos vecinos. Machael, un participante keniano-alemán comentó: “Tengo una carga por el estado espiritual de toda Europa, influenciada por el humanismo secular, el individualismo y el materialismo que juntos endurecen los corazones de las nacionales e inmigrantes haciéndolos inmune a las simples verdades del evangelio. Mi oración intercesora es más específica ya que entendí mejor la necesidad personal que la gente tiene en esta región. Quiera el Señor abrir nuestros ojos a la necesidad espiritual de Europa y se incrementen nuestras oraciones.”

Noruega: Por tres años, OM y otras organizaciones e iglesias locales han organizado tiempos de oración y entrenamiento para cristianos locales para compartir acerca de Cristo con sus vecinos y colegas. Muchos refugiados e inmigrantes son cristianos y han formado iglesias étnicas, pero muy pocas se han integrado a las iglesias noruegas locales. OM se preguntaba cómo estos grupos podrían reunirse como hermanos y se acercó a los líderes de las iglesias étnicas para organizar juntos una cena internacional para unas 200 personas el 21 de Mayo (Día de la Ascensión). Cada grupo trajo comida típica de su país de origen a la cena pensada principalmente para crear relaciones entre los cristianos noruegos y extranjeros. Dado que Noruega se está volviendo una nación más post-cristiana, OM espera que la afluencia de cristianos de otras partes del mundo sea una de las maneras en que Dios se dé a conocer a Si mismo. Ora por frutos duraderos a partir de esta cena y otros eventos similares.

Reino Unido: Matthias (24) participó del programa Encuentro con la Comunidad de OM Lifehope (Esperanza para la Vida) en el Reino Unido. Fue “Desafiado a predicar un domingo”, dijo. “Nunca antes tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo en Suiza, ¡y prediqué en Inglés! Me animó mucho la apertura de la gente en el vecindario, y disfruté mucho del tiempo en que pude visitar sus hogares, escuchar sus problemas y compartir mi fe.” Matthias trabajó con personas de muchas culturas diferentes que a menudo piensan y actúan en maneras diferentes y aprendió a confiar en Dios en muchas situaciones diferentes. “Disfruté las sesiones sobre descubrir la voluntad de Dios y aprender de otras religiones. Ahora vuelvo a Suiza sabiendo que misiones es parte del plan de Dios para mi vida.”

Barcos

India

Chandpa tiene un trasfondo Dalit. Está casada y tiene dos hijos. Hace dos años, Chandpa y toda su familia estaban viviendo en la pobreza extrema. Su esposo trabajaba por día como obrero de la construcción y ella atendía su casa. El magro salario de su esposo no alcanzaba para cubrir las necesidades familiares. Un día Chandpa escuchó sobre un Grupo de Ayuda Mutua del Centro de Educación Dalit, que funciona cerca de su casa y decidió unirse al mismo. Rápidamente aprendió cómo funciona el grupo y participó proactivamente en las actividades. Pronto fue elegida unánimemente como la presidente del grupo. En 2008, Chandpa recibió un préstamo del Grupo, con el que compró un taxi de tres ruedas. Su esposo manejaba el taxi y así obtenía un mayor ingreso. En nueve meses devolvieron el préstamo. En 2009, Chandpa pidió otro préstamo. Esta vez era para comenzar un taller de bordado, que ahora está funcionando a pleno. Juntos, ella y su esposo están ganando un mejor salario. Recientemente, la familia compró una pequeña casa. Los niños están fascinados porque ahora tienen un lugar propio. Chandpa comenta que este Grupo de Ayuda Mutua le ha dado a ella y su familia una vida que nunca antes imaginaron.

Iniciativas pioneras

Nepal: En dos días, el equipo atendió un campamento médico en dos diferentes vertederos, en total atendieron 400 pacientes. Fue una gran oportunidad para atender las necesidades físicas y médicas de los desprotegidos y compartir acerca de Dios a través de dramas, enseñanzas, conversaciones y tratados. Participaron un equipo de dramas, un equipo que atendió a los niños, otro ayudó a guardar el orden y, por supuesto, el equipo médico. También hubo otros que conversaron con la gente y ayudaron en lo que se necesitaba.

Dos personas del Equipo de Desafío Asia (EDA) se están yendo: uno de ellos en un año sabático y el otro regresa a su casa. Esto deja una gran brecha, puesto que las visas para obreros de corto plazo que vengan al equipo son extremadamente difíciles de obtener. Ora para que Dios obre para obtener estos permisos.

El EDA ha finalizado la organización de la Escuela Bíblica de Vacaciones (EBV), la cual consiste en medio día en donde niños de 7 a 14 años tienen actividades de juegos, canciones e historias bíblicas. Ahora están involucrados en organizar un campamento juvenil, donde esperan a unos 40 jóvenes y que se realizará justo después del EBV.

Un equipo está trabajando con un equipo nacional visitando iglesias, compartiendo el mensaje de Dios, animando a los creyentes a compartir con sus vecinos y ofreciendo apoyo a las iglesias en sus programas evangelísticos. Ya han entrenado más de 60 estudiantes en cómo alcanzar a otros. Lo hicieron en tres pequeños grupos que fueron a sus comunidades durante el mes de Mayo.

SportsLink Hungría: Luego de firmar un contrato de usufructo con las autoridades locales por 25 años, comenzamos a construir y desarrollar nuestro campo de baseball y softball en un lugar cercano a la oficina de OM. Todo el trabajo ha sido prestado por los jugadores, miembros del equipo y voluntarios. Más de USD 7000 (dólares estadounidenses) han sido donados para el proyecto de construcción, y pronto se convertirá en uno de los mejores complejos de baseball de país. Terry Lingenhoel de OM, ha sido elegido por la Federación de Baseball de Hungría como responsable del Desarrollo Juvenil. En nuestro campo se realizan las pruebas para el equipo nacional en categoría Cadetes (13-15) y Juniors (16-18). Terry es también el entrenador principal del equipo local en Erd.

Del 11 al 15 de Mayo, Sportslink Hungría fue anfitrión de una reunión donde participaron cuatro entrenadores de futbol americano de la FCA para debatir sobre ministerio y alianzas. La Asociación de Futbol Americano de Hungría está muy animada con el interés de FCA en trabajar juntos. Sportslink organizará un campamento de entrenamiento para los equipos nacionales de Cadetes y Juniors en el mes de Julio. Ora por oportunidades para compartir de Cristo con los mejores jugadores de baseball del país. Continuamos levantando fondos y mejorando el complejo de baseball en Erd. Ora para que este lugar sea utilizado por Dios para alcanzar nuestra ciudad y la comunidad del baseball con el evangelio. El día 20 de junio será el Día Deportivo Familiar evangelístico en Budapest. Ora por la planificación y por aquellos que asistirán para oír y entender el evangelio. Ora por el desarrollo de la alianza entre Sportslink, la FCA y la Liga Húngara de Futbol Americano (www.mafl.hu).

Tesoro sepultado, talento sin explotar

Cuando Susan Boyle caminó por el escenario el 11 de Abril, los jueces y la audiencia del programa ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ de ITV no estaban impresionados; algunos se burlaron abiertamente. Condicionados por la sociedad y los medios, ellos (y, admitamos, muchos de nosotros) no podrían haber imaginado que la mujer de mediana edad y con sobrepeso parada incómodamente en el centro del escenario podría cantar más de algunas líneas de su canción antes de comenzar a desafinar. Apenas había cantado la primera frase de ‘I dreamed a dream’ cuando los jueces, la audiencia en vivo y (más tarde) millones en YouTube se dieran cuenta que la mujer tenía una voz digna de ser escuchada por la reina. Tesoro sepultado

En su libro reciente, ‘Outliers’ (2), Malcolm Gladwell delinea el increíble ámbito de talento humano que permanece irreconocido y sin explotar en una enorme parte perdida de la sociedad. A veces, como en el caso de Susan Boyle, nuestros prejuicios condicionan nuestras expectativas con la apariencia exterior. En otros casos, el problema es sistémico. Muy a menudo las elecciones arbitrarias limitan las oportunidades, los desarrollos y las contribuciones.

La mayoría de los mejores jugadores de hockey canadienses han nacido a principio de año. Nacer en Enero o Febrero, dice Gladwell, no te hace un mejor jugador de jockey. Pero dado que el límite de edad para las ligas junior está dado por el calendario, cuando ellos comienzan a la edad de seis años, los niños nacidos entre Enero y Marzo tienden a ser un poquito más grandes y más rápidos que sus compañeritos que nacieron en Junio, y mucho mayores y más rápidos que los que nacieron en Noviembre o Diciembre. Como resultado, aquellos que nacieron antes en el año desde el primer año de escuela hasta la adolescencia, tienden a atraer más atención, mayor entrenamiento, y más tiempo en la pista de hielo, y tienen mayor oportunidad de llegar a estar entre los mejores jugadores, que aquellos que nacieron a fines de año.

¿Talento escondido por las expectativas?

Nosotros no competimos en una liga de hockey o en un reality show de talentos en TV, pero estas historias plantean preguntas para OM y, en general, para la iglesia, en misiones. La primera tiene que ver con expectativas y prejuicios. Jill Briscoe observó que cuando Samuel conoció a David, sólo vio a un muchacho. Isaí miró a su hijo y vio sólo un muchacho. Goliat miró a su oponente y (fatal error) vio sólo un muchacho. Pero Dios vio al rey en el muchacho.

Si fuéramos parte de un reality show de TV llamado ‘OM’s got talent’, me pregunto cuántos de nosotros oiríamos a los jueces decir, como lo hizo Susan Boyle: “¡Wow, cuando caminabas hacia aquí en el escenario [10, 20 ó 30 años atrás], no esperábamos algo así de tu parte!” ¿Y qué de aquellos que están caminando ahora en el escenario de OM por primera vez? ¿Vemos sólo al ‘muchacho’ o la ‘muchacha’ o le damos a cada cual una oportunidad justa? ¿Les limitamos prematuramente su potencial a causa de las expectativas convencionales, nuestros prejuicios que no nos permiten ver el tesoro de Dios escondido dentro de la persona?

Talento explotado a través de oportunidades

La segunda pregunta tiene que ver con oportunidades. Gladwell sugiere crear dos fechas para unirse a un equipo junior de la liga de hockey, con equipos separados para los niños que nacieron en la segunda mitad del año. Con esta doble oportunidad, el doble de los canadienses podrán jugar al hockey a nivel mundial. No todos los niños tienen el potencial de convertirse en estrella. Pero incrementar las oportunidades, dice, destrabará muchos tesoros de talentos que, de otra manera, seguirán enterrados y sin desarrollar.

¿Cuándo debemos abrir las oportunidades para dar ocasión a mostrar talentos sin explotar? Nuestra Iniciativa Josué existe “para ver a OM como una misión que identifica el potencial de liderazgo de las personas tan pronto como sea posible y desarrollarlos hasta alcanzar ese potencial”. ¿Quién entre nosotros tiene que dejar intencionalmente más espacio para que otros, especialmente miembros jóvenes de OM, puedan comenzar a brillar? Más allá del liderazgo, ¿qué otros talentos dados por Dios están ocultos dentro de OM y en nuestras iglesias, sin oportunidad de explotar: arte, música, servicio, enseñanza, predicación, evangelismo, administración?

Cantando para nuestro Rey

Espero que Susan Boyle finalmente cante ante la Reina. Sin embargo, no importa cuánto talento se descubra, en esa competencia sólo una persona gana y recibe ese honor.

En la iglesia y en OM, sin embargo, no hay un solo ganador. Mientras más talentos y dones se descubran y se les dé oportunidades, será mejor. Todos podemos cantar, juntos, no para nosotros mismos sino para la gloria del Rey Eterno.
