Dear prayer partners around the world,

Greetings in our risen Lord Jesus. These last few weeks have been tough for us as a movement. Mark and Kathy Knight are senior leaders in our ship ministry. Their son, Michael, has also been involved with OM Ships. On the night of 31 July he went to bed in apparent perfect health, but never woke up. The autopsy showed no clear reason for his death. Michael was 18 years of age and planning to go to worship college this October. The funeral was a time of grieving, but also of absolute assurance and many present were blessed and challenged. Please pray for Mark and Kathy and their daughters, Akila and Laura, as they seek to walk with Jesus and His people through their loss.

The day of Michael's funeral, I heard of the death of Colin Berry and his daughter, Rachel in a road accident in the USA. Lizyanet Berry was seriously injured, has been undergoing operations and is recovering. This family has been serving the Lord Jesus with us in a Middle Eastern country for a number of years. Please pray for Lizyanet as she not only has the challenge of physical recovery, but also adapting to life without her husband and daughter. She is going to need all of our prayers and support in the months and years ahead.

Pastor William Cuke, who has been our Country Leader in Barbados for a number of years, died recently. Please pray for his wife, Joy, and the family.

I was recently in the Netherlands where an encouraging number of people joined us at our annual GO conference. We thank the Lord of the Harvest for continuing to send out labourers into the harvest fields. Please pray for these new recruits as they settle into their fields of service.

Next Generation

Philippines: OM held a teen camp in Cebu in May with 100 teens from 10 areas. One leader shares about her experience: "God moved in the hearts of the teens during our camp. Many started to open up about their lives; tough teens began to smile in an environment so different from the streets." During one praise evening, as a leader prayed, one teen after another knelt in tears; many experienced the peace that comes from Jesus. Please pray that these will continue to feel God?s love and find peace and restoration in Him and become witnesses among their peers.

Chile: OM hosted seven young people from the USA, UK, Netherlands, Finland and Germany during their nine-month Intensive Training programme. The first six months equip newcomers with good basic training in Spanish and useful evangelism tools as they work alongside churches and reach out to Santiago's youth and homeless residents.

Participants later travel through the beautiful south, trying out extreme sports like rafting, climbing and mountain biking, and sharing with the indigenous Mapuche Indians. "I came to Chile looking for a year's adventure in another country, language and culture," says Philipp, from Germany. "The last nine months were probably the most influential time in my life - an incredible mix in which God put a new passion in my heart." Pray that participants now integrating into their homecultures will put their experience to good use. Ask God to prepare thenext ten young people who will begin the Intensive Training course this September.

Germany: Over 2,000 teenagers from all over the world met in Offenburg from 1?8 August for TeenStreet, themed 'Impossible', based on Hebrews 11:6, which talks about walking with God and earnestly seeking Him. As well as morning lessons and evening worship, the teens met in small groups, attended workshops, seminars, and participated in sporting events. ArtsLink, AIDSLink, and SportsLink offered activities and information. "Our biggest heart for TeenSteet is that the young people know that God is walking with them," said Debs and Josh Walker, the main stage speakers. "This week was about practically living out their faith with the Lord." One day, the teens went into Offenburg to collect glass bottles...and prayer requests - a good opportunity for the teens to share their faith, and for Offenburg to be impacted by Christians in a positive way. Joy, 14, from North Africa said, "I have a stronger relationship with Jesus and I've learned about faith and trust in God. I will read the Bible every day and tell everybody what I've learned." Please pray for the teens as they return home into their normal lives: that they will still have the same fire and passion for the Lord as they did at TeenStreet.

The Lighthouse in Halle was once a Lighting Technology College but, like many other buildings in former East Germany, has been vacant for years. "At 10:30am, college students have their first break and pop in. I ask a few, 'What do you think of the idea of opening a youth café in the Lighthouse? What should it look like?" Local Christians asked themselves, 'What can we do?' and soon discussions with OM began. As a team and finances came together, so the Lighthouse Project was born. "The café should be a place of meeting in Halle; a place where the message of hope and love is felt; a place of light that radiates into the city. We want to face the questions of youth, and together seek new answers," says Toni. Besides the youth café, the Lighthouse offers a Christian music school, free-time activities, counselling and seminars.

World Faiths

Turning Point (UK): We had the privilege of baptising a Central Asian believer we first met at?a booktable in 2007. He had come to the UK as an asylum-seeker. On the day we met him, we 'happened' to have the Jesus film in his language. As he watched it, he was greatly moved and started attending our Turkish-English fellowship. Later that summer, a believer from a Muslim background visited our fellowship and led H* in a prayer of Christian commitment. H* is battling possible deportation with immigration officials and has now applied for religious asylum. He cannot work and is struggling to keep his flat. Pray for his growing faith and for God's solution to his residency, health and housing problems.

Pakistan: Things have changed dramatically over the last two months as violence against Christians has increased. Homes have been burned down and eight Christians burned alive. Tensions still run high and fear is all around. Under current blasphemy laws, Christians can be accused of blasphemy against the Koran or the Prophet Muhammad very easily. We firmly believe that God is faithful to His followers even during this difficult period, as we continue to serve Him.

There are currently 30 students on our correspondence school course, The Straight Path. Using four videos and books, we aim to introduce 300 men and women to Jesus by next August. After Eid, on 25 October, the next course will begin with study groups in various locations. Last month we sent out 20 Bible movie DVDs, as a first step towards encouraging those interested to know more.

Europe

Russia: Bron and Colin Cleaver report amazing progress on OM's new Discipleship Centre in Siberia. The first and second floors are already finished and work has begun on the roof, thanks to volunteers from Canada who have come for a month to help build - all relatives of a team member. The new Discipleship Centre term begins again on 4 September in the old quarters, with the move hopefully to occur next January. The OM team is deeply thankful for worldwide support, including an offering from Logos Hope crew members in June. Pray for safety on the site, success with paperwork in registering the house and land, and for the balance of funds needed.

Norway: As the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, is underway, OM, partner organisations and churches are inviting local Christians to pray. Several ethnic churches will join in this fourth year of weekly meetings with the hope of multi-coloured and multi-national prayer meetings taking place. Praise God for the Christian immigrants that have come to Norway, many as refugees, and pray that they will be instrumental in reaching Norwegians and foreigners with the Good News. Pray for OM Norway as they look for a new Field Leader, and other staff members.

Moldova: is one of the most financially depressed countries in the world; unemployment is over 80 percent. The man on the street sees hope only in leaving the country for work elsewhere. Many fall victim to human trafficking schemes and children are frequently abandoned. OM has encouraged local churches to establish ten day centres to support needy children with hot meals after school. Tables and chairs facilitate homework, since many homes do not have such 'luxuries'. Churches sponsor nearly 20 sports teams, forming soccer leagues for under-13, -15 and -17-year-old boys. These teams also undertake service projects in their communities, which enables churches to help various villages. OM is presently hosting the fourth of five summer outreaches, with a total of 150 participants from across Europe and North America showing the love of Christ in practical ways. Pray for changed hearts and the strengthening of local believers.

Czech Republic: Last month, Iva met a Russian couple that has lived in Prague for years. They came to the office (about 150 km from Prague), asking how to join OM ships as volunteers. They were disappointed to hear that such a venture was only possible through being a Christian and actively involved in a local church. It naturally opened the door for Iva to talk about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus, and to share her testimony about how she became a Christian. God simply wanted the Russian couple to hear the Good News, and decided to use the Ships Ministry in a country without any sea! Pray that this couple would know God better.

Ireland: The message of the cross impacted the lives of 50 outreach participants from 11 nations, as well as hundreds of children, young people and adults this summer. The team in Athlone held three children's clubs daily. When Karen, from Scotland, saw a Muslim woman who had brought her son to join the kids' club on the Big Red Bus, she talked to her and later visited her home. "She was really touched that we came to see her," said Karen. "She knew that we were different because of the love shown to the children. The woman has been in the church and is now connected to the church members." Another team carried a 12-foot wooden cross from the Logos Hope in Cork to Lacken House in County Roscommon, stopping along the way to talk with and pray for dozens of people. "It was amazing to see God move so powerfully during the walk," shared Tim. "I've seen His heart for Ireland. The cross = not the wooden thing we carried, but the sacrifice Christ made for us - is powerful and life-changing."

Emerging Mission Movements

South Africa: Mpumi was asked to preach during an inner city outreach. At first reluctant, having never done so before?God gave him a message for forty homeless people. After the sermon, 15 men wanted to receive Christ! Mpumi recalled, "Years ago, people had told me that I might be an evangelist or a pastor; but it never made sense. It was awesome when God touched those 15 men. But, most of all, he touched me!"Please pray for Mpumi and others who preach God's Word in Africa.

She said she was 20 years old, but she looked 15. Mentally slow and shy, Coleen* was a sex worker on the streets of Pretoria. Before the OM training team went on the inner city outreach, one team member felt God touching his heart for the 'ladies of the night.' On the first night, he and his group met Coleen. While the girls on the team prayed for her, he wrote her a letter and prayed daily for her. The team later found Coleen again and discovered that she read his letter every day. She wanted to return to her family in Cape Town, so the team planned to put her on a bus the next morning. When the team arrived to pick up Coleen, the pimps asked where she was going, but no one stopped her. It was a miracle that she could leave so easily! Later her father sent a message to thank the OMers for sending her home. The training team also bought bus tickets for two other sex workers to go home and get off the streets. Pray for other women who want to leave but aren't able to escape. 

In May, Peter Tarantal, leader of OM's Emerging Mission Movements, and others held training for 120 rural pastors, which provided a broad overview of missions but also focused on developing leaders, empowering women, transforming community and developing youth. God often does His mightiest work in the most unlikely places through the most unlikely people: a pastor from Swaziland showed how a seemingly insignificant local church was inspired by the Word and became the hands and feet of the Lord in their needy community. 500 volunteer workers are involved in home-based care, feeding orphans and other related work. There is a fresh realisation to have greater partnership with the local church, and come alongside to serve them. Please pray for OM in Africa as they find new ways to partner with local churches. Pray for the continued growth of the church in Swaziland and the impact of the project.

Pioneering Initiatives

Hungary: In spring 2003, Terry Lingenhoel organised the first baseball camp for athletes in Erd. Shortly after starting regular practices, he joined the national league. "[The ministry] started as a desire to have a better form of outreach, to hold a relationship for a long time with people. In Hungary, it takes about three to five years of relationship building before men are ready to consider the gospel," said Terry. Six years later, Terry now belongs to the National Baseball Association's board and assists head coach Ingo Gottwald. This year, two American FCA volunteers and one Canadian OMer assisted the coaches at the national team's camp, while four interns from Bethany School of Missions (USA) helped with catering. With each different ministry and act of kindness, the 2009 Baseball Camp has been made complete.

Nepal: Foreign teams give out literature in the streets, and trek from village to village. One member relates, "I was chatting with Nepalis in the street, but the people weren't interested in the story of Jesus. After 30 minutes a merchant took a booklet, and asked what he could get by reading such a small book! He questioned me closely about Christianity, church and Jesus. Another Nepali came up, listened to our conversation and tried to explain Christianity, comparing it with Hinduism. I was so thankful! This was followed by another man who greeted me with a Christian greeting, said he was a believer, thanked me for sharing God's love in Nepal and kissed my hand! As he left, yet another man came and helped me talk to the merchant!

"Thus, I was able to have a good conversation with him through four Nepali Christians' help. Although Nepal is only 4% Christian, God used four believers to share with only one Hindu! It is so good to experience His desire to see people come to know Him! 

In a mountain village, a man bought a small package of books and began to read with such concentration that another man walking by began to read another of his books; later they exchanged them. A third man passing by asked what the books were about, and the first man explained very clearly that he was reading about Jesus. Soon this third man asked the team to sell him some books too, and he started to read. More men joined the group to buy and read books: it was a miracle to see more than 15 reading about Jesus!

Ships

Logos Hope (UK): From April through June, over 80,000 people visited Logos Hope in Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London, purchasing nearly 5,000 Bibles and tens of thousands of othereducational and Christian titles. "This is a wonderful experience and a wonderful service of bringing literature to transform and change people's lives," The Right Hon. Rev. George Grubb, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, told the gathered audience. One company director, moved by the?welcome he received from crew on board, emailed his staff and instructed them to visit the ship as a team-building exercise. Now serving needy communities in the Caribbean, the UK visit marked the beginning of all Godhas planned for Logos Hope.

Think again:

Building according to the plan

Growing up in the Andes mountains of Colombia, we had a lovely view from our house - that is, we should have had. The architect's design had been for large living room windows set low to the floor. Unsupervised, though, the builders laid bricks to the normal window height and no one wanted to offend them by tearing down their work. The result? For sixty years people sitting in that living room have seen only a partial picture of a spectacular view.

The bricklayers were doing exactly what they had been trained to do. Even if they could have read the building plans, they called for something far outside their experience. Building according to the plan would have required that someone stay with them to reveal step-by-step what the architect had in mind.

Rebuilding the walls?

This reminds me of the gospel's spread as recorded in the book of Acts. We love to pick on the 'legalists', but perhaps unfairly. As Christopher Wright notes, both sides in the Acts 15 debate would have agreed that "the good news must go to the Gentiles and they must be brought into obedient worship. The question was, what did such discipleship entail, and what were the entry requirements?"1

As they read the Prophets, those legalist disciples would have rejoiced over Gentiles who turned to God. But their end times understanding allowed them to see only part of God's plan: the 'becoming like Jews' aspects emphasized in passages like Isaiah 56:6,7 and 66:20,21 that, by themselves, helped justify their position.

In Jesus Christ, though, the dividing barrier was torn down (Ephesians 2:14). God did not let these well-intentioned 'bricklayers' rebuild the walls and limit the big picture of salvation.

Future-based building methods

Our understanding of God's future plan affects the way we, as builders, actively take part in mission. Changing metaphors, if we see the world as a doomed, sinking ship whose lifeboats must be filled through our actions, this will differ from those who have hope that the vessel can be turned away from the storm. Yet from both perspectives there is a desire to save lives.

The July 2009 International Bulletin of Missionary Research focuses on Christian Mission and the End of Time. John Hubers observes that early American missionaries were influenced by Jonathan Edwards and his non-cataclysmic millennial perspective of mission that would usher in God's kingdom. Michael Pocock describes how, in contrast, premillenial eschatology with its climactic end times emphasis was a driving force behind much of the North American missions advances of the 20th century.

Some of us today find verses such as Matthew 24:14 and the 'unreached peoples' theme as central not just to the 'why' but also the 'what' and 'how' of mission. Others might emphasize an 'integral mission' approach (Luke 4:17-19), or combinations of these and many other biblical themes - all with the potential of glorifying God.

My purpose here is not to advocate a specific viewpoint. Rather, I ask, where would you and I fit into the story if Acts 15 was re-set in the 21st century? Where do we need more breadth and freedom? What are the limits we should not pass? While 'eschatological agnosticism' may lead us to no framework at all and the acceptance of any good activity as a valid, even vital part of mission, a restricted view of God's big picture can, as for the Jewish legalists, lead us to an understanding of mission far more narrow than God intends.

As we take part in mission, let us not be like the Acts 15 legalists or the bricklayers who worked on my childhood home. Instead, may we build with a clear understanding of the Architect's plans, enabling others - and ourselves - to see as much as possible of the spectacular panorama of God's grace. And, as we do so, may it be with biblically-grounded assurance liberally seasoned with humility that enables us to listen, learn, and build to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 3:10).

INFORME INTERNACIONAL SEPTIEMBRE 2009

Queridos compañeros de oración alrededor del mundo,

Saludos en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesús resucitado. Las últimas semanas han sido muy difíciles para nosotros como movimiento. Mark y Kathy Knight son líderes muy antiguos en el ministerio de los barcos. Su hijo Michael, también ha estado involucrado con el ministerio de OM Barcos. Durante la noche del 31 de Julio fue a la cama gozando, aparentemente, de buena salud, pero nunca despertó. La autopsia no mostró una causa clara de la muerte. Michael tenía 18 años de edad y planeaba estudiar Adoración en Octubre. El funeral fue un tiempo de duelo, pero también ganar confianza y muchos de los presentes fueron bendecidos y desafiados. Por favor ora por Mark y Kathy y sus hijas Akila y Laura, que están buscando la guía de Jesús y la compañía de su pueblo a través de esta pérdida.

El día del funeral de Michael, oí de la muerte de Colin Berry y su hija Rachel en un accidente en una ruta de los Estados Unidos. Lizyanet Berry sufrió heridas de consideración, fue intervenida quirúrgicamente y se está recuperando. Esta familia ha servido al Señor Jesús con nosotros en un país de Medio Oriente por muchos años. Próxima Generación

Filipinas: OM llevó a cabo un campamento para adolescentes en Cebu durante el mes de Mayo con la participación de 100 jóvenes que llegaron desde 10 áreas. Una de las líderes compartió lo siguiente de su experiencia: “Dios obró en los corazones de los adolescentes durante el campamento. Muchos se abrieron para compartir sus vidas, hasta comenzaron a sonreír al vivir en un entorno totalmente diferente al de las calles.” Durante una noche de alabanza, cuando un líder oró, los adolescentes comenzaron a arrodillarse con lágrimas. Muchos experimentaron la paz de Dios que viene de Jesús. Por favor ora para que sigan sintiendo el amor de Dios y encuentren paz y restauración en Él y sean testimonio entre sus pares.

Chile: OM Chile fue anfitrión de siete jóvenes que llegaron desde EE.UU., Reino Unido, Países Bajos, Finlandia y Alemania quienes participaron del programa anual de nueve meses de Entrenamiento Intensivo. Los primeros seis meses de programa, los recién llegados pasan por un buen entrenamiento básico de español, así como de herramientas útiles para evangelismo, entretanto trabajan con iglesias locales y comparten con algunos jóvenes de Santiago y con algunos sin hogar que viven en la ciudad.

Los participantes viajan por los bellos paisajes del sur del país, practicando deportes extremos tales como rafting, alpinismo y mountain bike, al tiempo que comparten con grupos étnicos mapuches. “Llegué a Chile buscando aventuras y para vivir por un año en otro país con otro idioma y cultura”, dijo Philipp, de Alemania. “Los últimos nueve meses fueron probablemente los nueve meses más influyentes en mi vida. Los ministerios, clases y actividades con otros jóvenes son una mezcla increíble... Dios puso una nueva pasión en mi corazón.” Ora para que los participantes quienes se están readaptando a sus propias culturas utilicen sus experiencias para bien. Pide a Dios que prepare a los 10 jóvenes que participarán del próximo Entrenamiento Intensivo en Chile que comienza en Septiembre.

Alemania: Más de 2000 adolescentes de todo el mundo se reunieron en Offenburg, Alemania del 1 al 8 de Agosto para TeenStreet. El tema central del evento fue “Imposible”, en combinación con el versículo de Hebreos 11:6, que habla de caminar con Dios y buscarlo con decisión. El programa incluyó lecciones matutinas y sesiones de adoración por las noches. También los adolescentes se reunieron en pequeños grupos para asistir a talleres, seminarios y participar en eventos deportivos. Entre otras muchas cosas para hacer, ArtsLink, AIDSLink y Sports Link estuvieron allí ofreciendo actividades e información. “Lo que más esperamos de TeenStreet es que los adolescentes sepan que Dios está hablando con ellos”, dijeron Debs y Josh Walker, los oradores principales. Y agregaron que “esta semana se trató de vivir su fe con el Señor.” Un día los adolescentes fueron a la ciudad de Offenburg para juntar botellas de vidrio y pedidos de oración. Esta fue una buena oportunidad para que los adolescentes entiendan lo que se siente compartir su fe, y Offenburg fue impactada por cristianos en una manera positiva. Joy (14) del Norte de África, dijo: “Tengo una relación más fuerte con Jesús y he aprendido acerca de mi fe y a confiar en Dios. Leeré la Biblia cada día y le contaré a todos lo que aprendí.” Por favor ora por los adolescentes que vuelven a casa, a sus vidas normales, para que continúen con el mismo fuego y pasión por el Señor, como lo tuvieron en TeenStreet.

El Lighthouse (Faro) en Halle alguna vez fue el Lighting Technology College, pero, como muchos otros edificios de la ex Alemania Oriental, estuvo desocupado por años. “A las 10:30 AM los estudiantes tuvieron su primer recreo y salieron del salón. Les pregunté a algunos: ‘¿Que les parece la idea de abrir un café juvenil en el Faro?’ ¿Cómo debería lucir?’” Líderes cristianos locales se preguntaron: ‘¿Qué podemos hacer?’ y pronto comenzó el debate con OM. Cuando el equipo y las finanzas estuvieron listos nació el proyecto del Lighthouse. “El café debería ser un lugar de encuentros en Halle. Un lugar donde se sienta el mensaje de amor y esperanza. Un lugar cuya luz irradie a la ciudad. Queremos enfrentarnos a las preguntas de los jóvenes y buscar juntos las respuestas”, dijo Toni. Además del café, el Lighthouse ofrece una escuela de música cristiana, actividades de tiempo libre, consejería y seminarios.

Creencias Mundiales

Punto de Cambio (Reino Unido): Tuvimos el privilegio de bautizar a un creyente de Asia Central que conocimos por primera vez en una mesa de libros en 2007. Había venido al Reino Unido buscando asilo. Ese día ‘justo’ teníamos una copia de la película Jesús en su idioma. Cuando la vio, fue conmovido y comenzó a asistir a nuestras reuniones turco-inglesas. Ese mismo verano, nos visitó un creyente de trasfondo musulmán y guió a H* en la oración para tomar un compromiso cristiano. H* está enfrentando una posibilidad de ser deportado, pero ha pedido asilo religioso. Por esta situación no puede trabajar, y le cuesta mucho pagar el alquiler de donde vive. Ora por su crecimiento en la fe y por una solución de parte de Dios para su residencia, también por sus problemas de salud y vivienda.

Pakistán: Las cosas han cambiado dramáticamente en los últimos dos meses debido a la escalada de violencia contra los cristianos. Casas han sido incendiadas y ocho cristianos fueron quemados vivos. La tensión es muy fuerte y hay temor por todos lados. De acuerdo a las leyes actuales de blasfemia, los cristianos pueden ser acusados muy fácilmente de blasfemar contra el Corán y el Profeta Mahoma. Creemos firmemente que Dios es fiel a Sus seguidores aún en estos tiempos de dificultad, por eso le seguimos sirviendo.

Actualmente hay 30 estudiantes inscriptos en nuestra escuela por correspondencia llamada: El Camino Recto. Utilizando videos y libros queremos presentarles a Jesús a 300 hombres y mujeres durante Agosto. Luego de la celebración Eid, el 25 de Octubre, comenzará el nuevo curso con grupos en diferentes lugares. El mes pasado enviamos 20 DVD de la Biblia en película para animar a quienes están interesados en saber más.

Europa

Rusia: Bron y Colin Cleaver informaron del enorme progreso en el Nuevo Centro de Discipulado de OM en Siberia. El primer y segundo piso están terminados y se está trabajando en el techo, gracias a los voluntarios de Canadá que vinieron por un mes para ayudar con la construcción, todos son parientes de un miembro del equipo. El nuevo ciclo del Centro de Discipulado comienza el 4 de Septiembre en los viejos cuarteles, pero esperamos que podamos mudarnos al nuevo edificio en Enero. El equipo de OM está muy agradecido por el apoyo mundial, incluyendo las ofrendas que los miembros de la tripulación del Logos Hope realizaron en Junio. Ora por seguridad en el sitio de la construcción, que los trámites de registro del terreno y el edificio concluyan exitosamente y por el resto de los fondos que se necesitan.

Noruega: Como el Ramadán, el mes de ayuno musulmán ocurre en estos días, OM, otras organizaciones amigas e iglesias están animando a los cristianos a orar. Varias iglesias étnicas se unirán en estas reuniones semanales que se realizan por cuarto año consecutivo, con la esperanza de tener reuniones de oración multi-color y multi-nacional. Alaba a Dios por los cristianos inmigrantes que han venido a Noruega, muchos como refugiados, y ora para que sean instrumentos para alcanzar a noruegos y extranjeros con las Buenas Nuevas. Ora por OM Noruega que está buscando un nuevo Líder de Campo y otros miembros del personal.

Moldova: es uno de los países más deprimidos financieramente en el mundo. El desempleo se ubica sobre el 80%. Los hombres en las calles ven como única esperanza salir del país y trabajar en otro lugar. Muchas personas son víctimas de organizaciones de tráfico humano y los niños son frecuentemente abandonados. OM Moldova ha animado a iglesias locales a establecer centros de día para ayudar a los niños necesitados con una comida caliente luego de la escuela. Las mesas y sillas facilitan la tarea, puesto que muchos hogares no tienen estos “lujos”. Las iglesias también apoyan aproximadamente 20 equipos deportivos que forman una liga de niños menores a 13, 15 y 17 años. Estos equipos también realizan proyectos de servicio en sus comunidades. Ahora mismo, OM está llevando a cabo la cuarta de cinco campañas de verano en Moldova, con un total de 150 participantes que llegaron desde Europa, Canadá y los Estados Unidos para mostrar el amor de Cristo de formas prácticas. Ora por corazones transformados y por fortaleza para los creyentes locales.

República Checa: El mes pasado, Iva conoció a un matrimonio ruso que habían vivido en Praga por algunos años. Ellos vinieron a la oficina (a unos 150Km de Praga), para preguntar cómo podían unirse a los barcos de OM como voluntarios. Se desanimaron al oír que esa aventura sólo era posible para quienes son cristianos y que están involucrados activamente en una iglesia. Naturalmente esto abrió una puerta para que Iva les hable de lo que significa tener una relación personal con Jesús, y para compartir su testimonio con ellos. Dios simplemente quería que el matrimonio ruso escuchara las Buenas Nuevas, y ¡decidió utilizar el Ministerio de los Barcos en un país donde no hay mar! Ora para que estas personas conozcan mejor a Dios.

Irlanda: El mensaje de la cruz impactó la vida de los 50 participantes que vinieron a una campaña desde 11 países, pero también las vidas de cientos de niños y jóvenes, así como de adultos este verano. El equipo en Athlone realizó tres clubes de niños diarios. Cuando Karen de Escocia vio a una mujer musulmana que había traído a su hijo al club del Gran Ómnibus Rojo, ella se acercó para conversar y luego la visitó en su casa. “Ella se sintió muy conmovida de que hayamos ido a visitarla”, dijo Karen. “Ella sabía que somos diferentes por el amor mostrado a los niños. Ahora asiste a la iglesia y está en contacto con algunas personas de la congregación”. Otro equipo llevó una cruz de madera de casi tres metros desde el Logos Hope en Cork a Lacken House en el condado de Roscommon, deteniéndose en el camino para orar y hablar con docenas de personas. “Fue maravilloso ver a Dios obrar a lo largo del camino”, dijo Tim. “He visto su corazón por Irlanda. La cruz, no una de madera como la que llevamos nosotros, sino la del sacrificio de Cristo hecho por nosotros, es poderosa para cambiar vidas.”

Movimientos Misioneros Emergentes

Sudáfrica: Se le pidió a Mpumi que predicara durante la campaña en una ciudad. Primero se mostró reacio porque nunca lo había hecho antes. Pero Dios le dio un mensaje para cuarenta sin hogar que estaban allí. ¡Luego de escuchar el mensaje, 15 hombres quisieron recibir a Cristo! Mpumi recuerda que “años atrás algunos me decían que yo debía ser un evangelista o pastor, pero eso nunca tuvo sentido para mí. Fue maravilloso cuando Dios tocó a esos 15 hombres. Pero sobre todo, ¡Él me tocó a mí!” Por favor ora por Mpumi y por otros que predican la Palabra de Dios en África.

Ella dijo que tenía 20 años, pero parecía tener 15. Era lenta de mente y parecía tímida. Coleen* era una trabajadora sexual parada en las calles de Pretoria. Antes de que el equipo de entrenamiento de OM fuera a la ciudad, un miembro del equipo sintió que Dios tocaba su corazón por las “damas de la noche”. La primera noche, él y su grupo conoció a Coleen. Mientras las chicas del equipo oraban por ella, él le escribió una carta a Coleen. El equipo luego descubrió que Coleen leyó la carta cada día y que quería regresar con su familia en Cape Town, así que el equipo planeó ponerla en un ómnibus la mañana siguiente. El equipo fue a buscarla, los proxenetas preguntaron dónde iría, pero nadie la detuvo. ¡Es un milagro que pudo irse fácilmente! Luego su padre envió un mensaje para agradecer al equipo de OM por enviarla de regreso a casa.

Durante el mes de Mayo, Peter Tarantal, líder de Movimientos Misioneros Emergentes de OM, llevó a cabo un entrenamiento en el que participaron otras personas, destinado a un grupo de 120 pastores rurales en Sudáfrica. El entrenamiento les proveyó de una visión global y amplia de misiones, así como el enfoque específico en desarrollar líderes, empoderar a las mujeres, transformar comunidades y desarrollar a la juventud. Dios a veces hace su obra más poderosa en los lugares más insólitos con las personas menos pensadas: Una sesión sobre misión práctica, presentada por un pastor de Swazilandia, mostró cómo una iglesia local, que parecía insignificante, fue inspirada por la Palabra de Dios y se convirtió en las manos y los pies del Señor en su necesitada comunidad. El proyecto ha crecido y ahora cuenta con 500 voluntarios involucrados en cuidados a domicilio, alimentación de huérfanos y otros trabajos por el estilo. Es una percepción fresca de la importancia de unirse al trabajo de la iglesia local y poder servirlos. Por favor ora por OM en África mientras buscan nuevas formas de asociarse con iglesias locales. Ora por el continuo crecimiento de la iglesia en Swazilandia y el impacto del proyecto.

Iniciativas Pioneras

Hungría: En la primavera de 2003, Terry Ligenhoel organizó el primer campamento de baseball para atletas en Erd. Poco después de comenzar el entrenamiento regular, decidió inscribirse en la liga nacional. “(El ministerio) comenzó como un deseo de tener una forma mejor de programa evangelístico, para mantener una relación por un tiempo largo con las personas. En Hungría, toma de tres a cinco años desarrollar una relación para que los hombres estén listos para considerar el evangelio.”, dijo Terry. Seis años han pasado desde aquel comienzo. Terry ahora es miembro del consejo de la Asociación Nacional de Baseball y asistente del entrenador principal, Ingo Gottwald. Este año, dos voluntarios de la FCA Estadounidense y un miembro de OM Canadá asistieron a los entrenadores en el campamento del equipo nacional, mientras que cuatro internos de la Behany School of Missions (EE.UU.) ayudaron con el catering. El Campamento de Baseball 2009 se desarrolló con diversos ministerios y actos de amabilidad.

Nepal: Equipos que vienen del extranjero reparten literatura en las calles, y caminan de aldea en aldea. Un miembro del equipo compartió que “conversaba con nepalíes en las calles, pero ellos no estaban interesados en la historia de Jesús. Luego de 30 minutos un comerciante tomó un pequeño libro, y preguntó ¡qué podía aprender de un pequeño libro! Me cuestionó sobre el cristianismo, la iglesia y Jesús. Otra persona se acercó, escuchó nuestra conversación y trató de explicar el cristianismo, comparándolo con el hinduismo. ¡Yo estaba muy agradecido! Llegó otro hombre que me saludó como se saludan los cristianos aquí y dijo que era creyente, me agradeció por compartir el amor de Dios en Nepal y ¡me besó la mano! Él se fue, pero vino otro hombre más que me ayudó a hablar con el comerciante.

“Así que pude tener una buena conversación con esta persona a través de la ayuda de cuatro nepalíes cristianos. Aunque hay sólo un 4% de cristianos en Nepal, Dios usó a cuatro creyentes para compartir con un solo hindú. ¡Es realmente bueno experimentar Su deseo de ver a las personas que vengan a conocerle!”

En una aldea que se encuentra en la montaña, un hombre compró un pequeño paquete de libros y comenzó a leerlos con tal concentración que otro hombre que caminaba por ahí comenzó a leer otro de sus libros, más tarde ellos intercambiaron sus libros. Un tercer hombre pasaba por ahí y les pregunto de qué se trataba, el primer hombre le explicó claramente que estaban leyendo de Jesús. Pronto el tercer hombre le pidió al equipo que le venda libros y comenzó a leerlos. Más hombres llegaron al grupo y comenzaron a leer los libros: ¡fue un milagro ver a más de 15 personas leer acerca de Jesús!

Barcos

Logos Hope (Reino Unido): Desde Abril a Junio, más de 80 000 personas visitaron el Logos Hope en Edimburgo, Belfast, Cardiff y Londres, quienes compraron casi 5000 Biblias y decenas de miles de libros cristianos y educacionales. “Es una experiencia maravillosa y un servicio extraordinario llevar literatura para transformar y cambiar las vidas de las personas”, le dijo a la audiencia el Honorable Reverendo George Grubb, Señor Alcalde de Edimburgo. El director de una compañía fue tan sorprendido con el recibimiento que le dieron en el barco, que le escribió un email a su personal ordenándoles que visiten el barco como una experiencia de trabajo en equipo. Ahora el barco está sirviendo a comunidades necesitadas en el Caribe, pero la visita al Reino Unido marcó el comienzo de todo lo que Dios ha planeado para el Logos Hope.

Una vez más, en nombre de los 5500 obreros de más de 95 países trabajando en más de 110 países, agradezco profundamente tus oraciones y tu apoyo.

Pensemos otra vez

Construyendo de acuerdo al plan

Mientras crecíamos en la cordillera de los Andes en Colombia, tuvimos una hermosa vista desde nuestra casa, o eso es lo que deberíamos haber tenido. El plano del arquitecto preveía una gran ventana en la sala de estar que llegara hasta el piso. Sin embargo, los constructores levantaron una pared de ladrillos hasta el nivel normal de las ventanas y nadie quiso ofenderlos pidiéndoles que tiraran abajo la pared. ¿Cuál fue el resultado? Por dieciséis años las personas que se sentaban allí tuvieron sólo una vista parcial del espectacular paisaje.

Los constructores hicieron exactamente lo que les habían enseñado que hicieran. Aun cuando eran capaces de leer el plano de construcción, lo que veían estaba fuera de su experiencia. Para que construyeran de acuerdo al plano, quizás necesitaban a alguien que estuviera con ellos y les indicara paso a paso lo que el arquitecto tenía en mente.

¿Reconstruir los muros?

Esto me recuerda a la expansión del evangelio tal como se la relata en el libro de Hechos. Nos encanta agarrárnosla con el ‘legalismo’, pero quizás de una manera injusta. Como menciona Christopher Wright, ambos lados del debate de Hechos 15 estarían de acuerdo que “las buenas nuevas debían llegar a los gentiles y éstos debían ser atraídos a la adoración obediente. La pregunta era qué implicaba esta clase de discipulado y cuáles eran todos los requisitos.”1

Como habían leído a los profetas, los discípulos legalistas debieron haberse regocijado en que los gentiles se volvieran a Dios. Pero su entendimiento de los últimos tiempos sólo les permitía ver parte del plan de Dios: el aspecto de ‘pasar a ser como judíos’ enfatizados en pasajes como Isaías 56:6,7 y 66:20,21. Tales pasajes les ayudaban a justificar su posición.

En Jesucristo, sin embargo, la barrera de división fue derribada (Efesios 2:14). Dios no permitió a estos bienintencionados ‘constructores’ reconstruir los muros y limitar al gran paisaje de la salvación.

Métodos de reconstrucción basados en el pasado

Nuestro entendimiento del plan futuro de Dios, afecta la manera en que nosotros, como constructores, nos involucramos activamente en misiones. En otras palabras, si vemos al mundo como un barco hundiéndose, condenado a muerte, cuyos botes salvavidas deben ser llenados de personas a través de nuestras acciones, nuestra actitud será diferente a la de los que esperan que el barco sobreviva a la tormenta. Aún así, ambas perspectivas comparten el deseo de salvar vidas.

El Boletín Internacional de Julio de 2009 sobre Investigación Misionera, se enfoca en La Misión Cristiana y los Últimos Tiempos. John Hubers observa que los primeros misioneros estadounidenses fueron influenciados por Jonathan Edwards y su perspectiva post-milenaria para anunciar el Reino de Dios. Michael Pocock describe cómo, por el contrario, la escatología pre-milenaria con su énfasis en el clímax de los últimos tiempos fue una fuerza que impulsó a las misiones norteamericanas al avance del siglo XX.

Algunos de nosotros encontramos a versículos como Mateo 24:14 y el tema de los ‘pueblos no alcanzados’ como asuntos centrales no solo en el ‘por qué’ de las misiones, sino en el ‘qué’ y el ‘cómo’. Otros pueden enfatizar un enfoque de ‘misión integral’ (Lucas 4:17-19), o una combinación de estos y otros muchos temas bíblicos, todos con el potencial de glorificar a Dios.

Mi propósito aquí no es abogar desde un punto de vista específico. Lo que me pregunto es ¿dónde estaríamos tú y yo en la versión del siglo XXI de la historia de Hechos 15? ¿Dónde necesitamos más amplitud y libertad? ¿Cuáles son los límites que no deberíamos pasar? Mientras que el ‘agnosticismo escatológico’ nos puede guiar a no tener un marco de referencia y a aceptar cualquier buena actividad como válida y aún vital para la misión; una visión restricta del gran paisaje de Dios puede, como lo hizo con los judíos legalistas, guiarnos a un entendimiento de la misión, mucho más angosto que lo que Dios pretende.

Al involucrarnos en misiones, que no seamos como los legalistas de Hechos 15 o como los constructores que trabajaron en el hogar de mi infancia. Construyamos con un entendimiento claro de los planos del Arquitecto, permitiendo a otros (y a nosotros mismos), ver al máximo posible el espectacular panorama de la gracia de Dios. Y, mientras lo hacemos, que sea con seguridad fundamentada en la Biblia sazonada liberalmente con la humildad que nos permite escuchar, aprender y construir para la gloria de Dios (1 Corintios 3:10).
