Dear partners in prayer,

I am writing this update in Germany the evening before we begin four days of meetings with our International Executive Committee. By the time you get this update, the meetings will probably be over, but please pray for efficient implementation of decisions made here in our fields around the world. There is a lot of change in this executive group at present. At these meetings we will be saying a big ‘thank you’ to three members who have served faithfully over many years and three new members will be joining the team over the next few months.

One subject we will discuss is our International Leaders Meetings and General Council, to be held in Thailand in March of next year. This will be the first time our new, elected General Council meets. This body is the custodian of the policies of OM, and is an extremely important body in our movement. Pray for David Greenlee who, as the initial chairman of this council, will be putting together the agenda in the coming days.

Another subject is what we know as Emerging Mission Movements, or EMM. Missionary movements are emerging or have already emerged in areas of the world that, for so long, were receivers of mission work. This is an immensely exciting development in the world of missions and we want to do all we can to facilitate this move of God.

Philippines: All OM personnel are safe, following the devastating floods that ripped through Manila: the worst to hit the country in four decades, terrifying residents and forcing them to seek refuge on roofs. Over 140 people have now been confirmed dead and around half a million people have been displaced after more than 40cm of rain fell on Manila within 12 hours on one day, submerging houses, washing out shanties and turning roads into raging rivers. One of the worst hit areas was where the OM office is located, but the base was spared. However, there is no water, electricity or phone lines.

There were frightening hours for some OM personnel. One family’s son walked for five hours in neck-high water. One team member shared: “Water was up to the first step on the concrete floor and started coming inside the house. It is going down very slowly, as all rivers and canals are flooded. Everything from downstairs has been moved to the upstairs of the house.”

OM will partner with other churches and ministries to bring relief as quickly as possible. To make a donation, please contact your local OM office.

Europe

Poland: Despite urgent prayers for the rain to stop, the first day of OM’s childrens’ programme in Kutno was wet and muddy, yet 18 church members took time off to help organise the event. Quick to respond, members of the church brought a tent and chairs to accommodate the children. Fifty children turned up and many parents stayed to watch. The children didn’t mind getting wet; in fact, the pouring rain seemed to make the story, Noah and the Ark, come alive.

The next day, a former alcoholic shared music and testimony with most of the residents. Some accepted his invitation to attend a two-day outreach for alcoholics at a nearby school canteen. The warm reception and openness of the residents encouraged the team, and they are hoping to do a similar outreach in another poor area in Kutno later this year. Please pray for the children who came to the event, and for the OM team as they organise future outreaches in different areas around Kutno.

France: Fourteen people helped the Evangelical Baptist Church of Bruay-la-Buissière and Auchel share God’s love with inhabitants of their cities this month. Michael (Germany) and Maryvonne (France) met a group of 15-20 teenagers with beer cans in their hands.

“Maryvonne invited them to do a survey with us,” says Michael. “At the end, she asked me to explain the gospel to the teenagers. In the end, all the teenagers, at first so mistrustful, seemed to have changed their attitude; they saluted us with their beer cans! I was surprised by the courage of this sister in Christ, but even more so in seeing the Holy Spirit touch the hearts of these young people who need Jesus so much.”

Maryvonne adds, “We also met a woman who cried as we spoke to her; she also allowed us to pray for her and she realised that Jesus loves her. She was astonished that God could love her.”

Please pray for these teenagers and this woman who heard about God. Pray that the church will continue to reach out to people in the area, and that they will experience growth through their efforts.

Norway: Anne-Marit Viljoen, together with husband Alwyn, has led our work in Norway for years. Results from a recent biopsy showed an early stage of breast cancer in Anne-Marit. An operation is scheduled for 15 October in Kristiansand, and two weeks later radiation will follow, five days a week, for the next 5-6 weeks. Pray for the Viljoens as they work through this and other health issues. Sensing a desire for new challenges, they will step down from responsibility for OM Norway after December 2010 at the latest. Pray as the OM board seeks the right replacement.

Spain: Over 40 million people come every year to Spain as tourists, for the
 beaches, fiestas, and holidays. Some come to serve God. During the whole month of July, we were privileged to have young 
people from 12 countries to participate in two evangelistic
 outreaches. The first was in Galicia, in the northwest, working
 alongside the only church in Naron. Though very few on the team spoke Spanish, children
 who came regularly to the kids club, had no problem enjoying the program. Everyone participated in sowing seed through tract distribution and an evening coffee bar outreach; braver ones presented the gospel in open air meetings, and through sharing testimonies.

A second group went to
 Extremadura, the ‘extremely hard area’ where there are no churches, to help 
a missionary couple who have struggled there for years.
 The team faced difficulties spiritually and physically, broken equipment, strained relationships—but all learnt first hand the difference it makes to pray 
together. One group ran the kids club, another moved around making contacts and a third team devoted itself to praying 
continually. God did something vey special: the missionary couple were revived, many good contacts resulted, and the team was ready for more!

Within a few days, a group of over 30 
teens and young people traveled to the TeenStreet congress in 
Germany. As most come from small churches and are often the only 
believer in their school, being with over 3600 young people from all over
 Europe was a faith-building experience. They are already beginning to
encourage friends to come with them next year. The team will hold TeenStreet days throughout the year.

Ships

Logos Hope: Borgi (Germany) was the team leader of crew members who woke up early to share coffee, cookies, juice and God’s love to the people waiting to go to Trinidad at Scarborough’s ferry terminal. They started at 5:20 in the morning, and the passengers were supposed to leave at 6:00 a.m., but due to a ferry delay, crew members had more time to interact with locals.

Alexia (Mexico) shared The Most Important Story Ever Told with kids while Caribbean Serve participants Kedisha (Jamaica) and Marita (Barbados) served coffee and juice. Borgi illustrated a simple message using a sketchboard, and afterwards said, “They were challenged, especially in the area of forgiveness. They have experienced so much brokenness in their lives. Many of them don’t know what it is to really have a good friend.”

Please pray for the ministry of the Logos Hope in the Caribbean. Please pray that the children who heard the story will continue to learn about God and grow to become men and women of faith. Relief & development

Pakistan: The government has started the voluntary resettlement of Internally Displaced People (IDP) wishing to return to their home districts. About 200,000 families have moved back to their original homes in the Swat Valley, or relocated to new regions. Much help is needed for those who have left the camps to restart life from scratch.

OM, in partnership with Operation Mercy (a relief & development partner organisation), is investigating opportunities to assist 30 former IDP families. The village in which they met these 120 people is one where they have previously been working in response to the 2005 earthquake. There are several people with medical needs. Hunger and malnutrition are constant problems in need of outside support.

Often, the IDPs return home only to find danger still nearby. Children are especially affected by the fighting, and the presence of the army and militia. Curfews are enforced, while flying bullets and bomb blasts still rid the region of peace and stillness.

Emerging mission movements

Zambia: Alex, a university student from USA, spent six weeks as an intern with OM, serving in almost every area of ministry, from preaching in churches to scrubbing dishes in the kitchen. Hear his observations:

“I loved serving with OM Africa for my internship and seeing the different ways they are mobilising the church in Africa to fulfill the Great Commission. I experienced how God’s church in Africa is strong, and how they are ready to go on and reach their own people with the love of God through Jesus Christ. I saw how OM/ProChristo is preparing the youth of Africa to become future missionaries to their native countries. Through courses, students are able to get real biblical knowledge of what it means to be a true disciple of Christ and how their roles as disciples integrate with missions. What better way to reach the widows, orphans and the sick of Africa than with their own people who have become the children of God?”

Please pray for the students at the discipleship training course. Pray for more from Africa to be called into missions to reach their communities and the neighbouring villages and countries.

South Africa: Praise the Lord that the Training Team’s outreach in Botswana went well and that they returned safely. The team had a difficult time on the border because, with such a diverse group of nationalities entering, the officials were concerned about human trafficking. Praise God for the visas that the Zimbabwean students were granted at the border. This means that they can continue the training for the time being. Keep praying for an extension of these visas so they can finish their six-months’ training in South Africa.

Namibia: Please pray for three outreach groups from the USA in different parts of Kaokoland (in the northwest). The teams are teaching local believers how to bring the gospel to their own people as well as to tourists who are visiting their communities. Pray for God’s intervention during the elections in November so that Christians may lead a quiet and peaceful life.

Bangladesh: The computer and discipleship training course for believers is going well, with participants learning new computer skills and studying God’s Word. Recently they went out to share what they were learning, which was a stretching and rewarding experience.

We continue to teach and develop leaders for rural fellowship groups. In addition to last month’s training camp, regular teaching meetings take place everywhere we work. More people are taking a public step of faith, especially women, but this is just the beginning of their spiritual journey: they need to take on-going steps towards spiritual maturity.

Four of our rural workers met for a few days of teaching, fellowship and prayer. Many issues were discussed, as we sought together how best to serve God as increasing numbers of people are making life-changing decisions in these areas.

India

Mr. and Mrs. Dev* have two sons and a daughter. They were struggling financially and had no peace. While an OM men’s team was having a cottage prayer meeting, Mr. and Mrs. Dev joined it and requested prayers. The team laid hands on them and prayed. A month later Mrs. Dev testified that they now have peace, financially they are doing better, and they purchased a Bible. They are growing in the knowledge of God and sometimes join the prayer meetings.

Dilip*, who had earned everything in life, was worried about his soul once he dies. Some of the men on the team explained from the Word about life after death and God’s judgment. Surprised, he acknowledged that Jesus is the only real living God. He and his family are growing in faith. Please pray for both of these families, and for the continued impact of OM in India and that more would come to know Christ.


World Faiths

Middle East: For many years, Salmah’s* husband never accompanied her to church, though he claimed to be a believer. One day, she came home with her gift of literature, placing her precious package on the table. Her husband picked up a book by Reinhard Bonke. Reading the cover, he became very excited and asked his wife to keep it so that he could read it after he returned from work. She was surprised by his sudden interest and was greatly encouraged. Excited, she came to the conference to share this wonderful news: God is reaching people through literature. Pray for the power of the written word. Pray that people will read the Bible, and that all of the literature handed out will change lives.

A network of organisations, churches and individuals wanting to support new Christians in the Muslim world have established a forum for this purpose with the motto, Set My People Free To Worship Me. This network seeks to promote freedom to choose one’s faith, freedom to worship and practice their faith, freedom to marry non-Muslims and freedom to raise children in the Christian faith.

A global rally in support of these rights and freedoms is scheduled for the Saturday of Easter 2010. All ideas and strategies are welcome to this forum, which is hoped to be an effective resource for local groups around the world who will advocate for justice and the rights of Christians everywhere. You are encouraged to raise awareness of this need among other human rights groups.

Think again: The demanding master

Elements of the parable of the talents, Jesus’ final parable recounted in Matthew 25, remind me of my unforgettable childhood encounters with…Mrs. Oppenheimer. A German immigrant to Colombia, for many of the missionary kids in Medellin she was our first piano teacher. Twice a week most of us would take our turns slipping out of our small school and over to the piano room, the two-minute walk sufficient time to imagine the life-shortening tortures at our demanding master’s disposal!

OK, I am exaggerating—but not by much! You see, while Mrs. Oppenheimer didn’t like mistakes, what she simply would not tolerate was laziness. She discerned how much talent lay inside each child and pressed us to achieve as much as possible with that God-given ability. The result? Incredible progress and beautiful music…or, for those who gave less than maximum effort, a response that I prefer not to remember!

Faithful with what we have

This final parable of the talents is a story of three men, each entrusted by their master with a huge sum, told by Jesus to describe what kind of servants we should be as we await his return (Matthew 24:45). We don’t know what the first two did with the money, but they got busy, took risks, and gained a 100% return. The one with two talents did not focus on having less than his colleague. The one with five did not rest when he had earned three—although it was 50% more than the second man gained. They did their best as wise and faithful servants who made the most of what they had. Like Mrs. Oppenheimer’s piano students who practiced hard every day, these two men could enter their master’s presence without a hint of fear.

The third servant, though, was afraid. He knew that the master was a demanding man (Greek:skleros, as in arteriosclerosis). Rather than risk his anger over a potential loss, he did the safe thing: he buried the talent, kept it secure, and, trembling, gave it back in its entirety to the master.

Demanding our best

Being demanding is an aspect of Jesus’ character that we don’t talk about much. Yes, he knows our needs; he is sensitive to our weakness (1 Peter 5:7, Hebrews 11:34). This parable, though, suggests that he is not at all impressed by laziness or second-best efforts as we handle the resources, abilities, and gifts of incredible value given to each of us according to our ability. Our service and participation in mission obviously requires the enabling of the Holy Spirit. But Jesus here points to consequences and evaluation, to a prize or a penalty based on whether we have stretched ourselves in creative faithfulness or, out of laziness and fear, fail to make the most of what God has given.

A master who brings out the best

Before I leave you with the impression that Mrs. Oppenheimer was a tyrant, I should relate another memory. I was taking part in my first recital, playing a piece far beyond what other teachers would have enabled me to perform. After I finished (no, I didn’t play it perfectly) the parents present politely applauded. I ignored them, though, and stole a glance at Mrs. Oppenheimer. She quietly nodded and smiled—subtle, but definitely a smile. It was her reserved way of saying “well done.” At that moment it meant the world to me and filled me with joy.

You see, Mrs. Oppenheimer was demanding, but she wasn’t harsh. If I only could have taken lessons with her for several years, and not just a few months, who knows what return I might have gotten on that talent that, sad to say, I never fully developed. n

INFORME INTERNACIONAL OCTUBRE 2009

Querido compañero de oración:

Esta noche, estoy escribiendo este informe en Alemania antes de comenzar cuatro días de reuniones con nuestro Comité Ejecutivo Internacional. Para el tiempo que leas este informe, probablemente las reuniones habrán terminado. Por favor ora por implementación eficiente en nuestros campos alrededor del mundo, de las decisiones que se tomen aquí. Hay muchos cambios en el grupo ejecutivo. En estas reuniones les diremos “muchas gracias” a tres miembros que han servido fielmente durante muchos años y tres nuevos miembros se nos unirán en los próximos meses.

Un tema que discutiremos será nuestras Reuniones de Líderes Internacionales y el Concilio General que tendrán lugar en Tailandia durante el mes de Marzo 2010. Será la primera vez que nuestro nuevo Concilio General electo se reunirá. Este cuerpo es el responsable de custodiar las políticas de OM, un grupo extremadamente importante en nuestro movimiento. Ora por David Greenlee quien es el líder de este grupo y organizará la agenda para dicha reunión.

Otro tema es lo que conocemos como Movimientos Misioneros Emergentes, o MME. Movimientos misioneros están emergiendo o ya han emergido en áreas del mundo donde, por mucho tiempo, sólo recibían misioneros. Este es un desarrollo inmensamente apasionante en el mundo de las misiones y queremos hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para facilitar este movimiento de Dios.

Filipinas: Todo el personal de OM Filipinas está a salvo a pesar de las devastadoras inundaciones que han azotado Manila. Esta ha sido la peor inundación en Filipinas en las últimas cuatro décadas. Los residentes aterrorizados tuvieron que buscar refugio. Más de 140 personas murieron y alrededor de medio millón ha sido desplazado luego de que lloviera 40cm sobre Manila en 12 horas durante el Sábado 26 de Septiembre pasado, lo que provocó que haya casas tapadas por el agua, chozas arrasadas y caminos convertidos en furiosos ríos. Una de las áreas más afectadas de Manila fue donde está situada la oficina de OM Filipinas, pero esta no fue afectada. Sin embargo, no hay agua, electricidad ni líneas telefónicas.

Fueron horas aterradoras para algunos de los miembros del equipo. El hijo de una familia tuvo que caminar por cinco horas con el agua hasta el cuello. Un miembro del equipo contó que “el agua comenzó a entrar en la casa. Ahora el nivel de agua está bajando lentamente, puesto que los ríos y canales están desbordados. Tuvimos que subir todas las cosas de la planta baja al primer piso.”

OM Filipinas se unirá a iglesias y ministerios de ayuda tan pronto como sea posible. Para hacer donaciones para ayudar a los damnificados, por favor comunícate con la oficina de OM en tu país.

Europa

Polonia: A pesar de las oraciones para que las lluvias cesaran, el primer día del Programa para Niños de OM Polonia en Kutno, fue húmedo y barroso. Pero esto no detuvo a 18 miembros de una iglesia que dedicaron su tiempo libre para ayudar a organizar el evento. Su respuesta no se hizo esperar y pronto trajeron una tienda para alojar a los niños, mientras otros llevaron sillas al lugar. Para sorpresa del equipo, 40 niños llegaron para el programa y muchos papás se quedaron para ver. Los niños no se preocuparon por mojarse, de hecho, la lluvia hizo que la historia de “Noé y el Arca” cobre vida.

Al día siguiente, un ex alcohólico compartió su música y testimonio con la mayoría de los residentes y algunos aceptaron su invitación para asistir al programa de dos días para alcanzar a alcohólicos en una cantina cercana. El caluroso recibimiento y la apertura de los residentes animó al equipo y esperan hacer otro programa en otra área pobre en Kutno más cerca de fin de año. Por favor ora por los niños que vinieron al evento. Ora por OM Polonia mientras organizan futuros programas en diferentes áreas alrededor de Kutno.

Francia: Catorce personas vinieron para ayudar a la Iglesia Bautista Evangélica de Bruay-la-Buissière y Auchel compartió el amor de Dios con los habitantes de la ciudad este mes. Michael de Alemania, y Maryvonne de Francia, encontraron un grupo de quince o veinte adolescentes con latas de cerveza en sus manos.

“Maryvonne invitó a algunos de ellos a hacer un encuesta con nosotros”, dijo Michael. “Cuando terminamos la encuesta, ella me pidió que les explique el evangelio a los adolescentes. Al final, todos aquellos adolescentes, que al principio se habían mostrado desconfiados, cambiaron su actitud: ¡nos saludaron con sus latas de cerveza! Me sorprendió el coraje de esta hermana en Cristo, pero me sorprendió aún más ver al Espíritu Santo tocar los corazones de estos jóvenes que tanto necesitan a Jesús.”

Maryvonne agregó que “también encontramos a una mujer que lloró cuando hablamos con ella, nos permitió que orásemos por ella y se dio cuenta de que Jesús la ama. Estaba atónita de que Dios pudiera amarla.”

Por favor ora por estos adolescentes y la mujer que escucharon de Dios. Ora para que la iglesia continúe alcanzando a las personas de esta área y que esto produzca crecimiento como resultado de sus esfuerzos.

Noruega: Anne-Marit Viljoen y su esposo Alwyn han liderado el trabajo en Noruega por varios años. Los resultados de una biopsia realizada a Anne-Marit han mostrado un cáncer de mama en etapa temprana. Se ha programado una cirugía para el 15 de Octubre en Kristiansand y dos semanas después recibirá sesiones de rayos cinco veces por semana, durante cinco o seis semanas. Ora por los Viljoen mientras están atravesando esta situación y enfrentando otros problemas de salud. Buscando nuevos desafíos, ellos dejarán el liderazgo de OM Noruega antes de Diciembre 2010. Ora por los responsables de buscar reemplazo para ellos.

España: Más de 40 millones de personas llegan por año a España como turistas. Son atraídos por sus playas, sus fiestas y fechas especiales. Algunos vienen a servir a Dios. Durante todo el mes de Julio, tuvimos el privilegio de tener a jóvenes de doce países participando de dos eventos evangelísticos. El primero se realizó en Galicia, en el noroeste del país, trabajando junto con la única iglesia en Narón. Aunque muy pocos en el equipo hablaban español, los niños que asisten regularmente al club de niños no tuvieron problemas para disfrutar del programa. Todos participaron en sembrar semillas a través de la distribución de folletos y un programa en un café. Los valientes presentaron el evangelio en reuniones al aire libre, contando sus testimonios.

Un segundo grupo fue a Extremadura, el “área extremadamente dura” donde no hay iglesias. Ellos ayudaron a un matrimonio misionero que han venido luchando por algunos años. El equipo enfrentó dificultades espirituales y físicas, equipos rotos, tirantez en las relaciones. Pero todos aprendieron de primera mano la diferencia que produce el orar juntos. Un grupo dirigió un club de niños, otro caminó por los alrededores haciendo contactos, y un tercero se dedicó a orar continuamente. Dios hizo algo muy especial: el matrimonio misionero fue estimulado nuevamente, se hicieron muchos buenos contactos y ¡el equipo estaba listo para más!

Después de unos días, más de 30 adolescentes y jóvenes viajaron al Congreso TeenStreet en Alemania. Como la mayoría viene de iglesias pequeñas y a menudo son los únicos creyentes en sus escuelas, estar entre 3600 jóvenes de toda Europa fue una experiencia que les hizo crecer en su fe. Ya están animando a otros amigos a que los acompañen el año próximo. El equipo organizará jornadas de TeenStreet durante el año.

Barcos

Logos Hope: Borgi (Alemania) fue el líder de un equipo de miembros de la tripulación quienes se levantaban temprano para compartir un café, galletitas, jugo y el amor de Dios a las personas que esperaban para ir a Trinidad en la estación de ferry de Scarborough. Comenzaban a las 5:20 de la mañana, y los pasajeros partirían a las 6:00, pero debido a un retraso del ferry, el equipo tuvo más tiempo para interactuar con la gente.

Alexia (México) compartió el libro “La Historia Más Importante” con algunos niños mientras que Kedisha (Jamaica) y Marita (Barbados), participantes del programa Servicio Caribeño, compartían café y jugo. Borgi ilustró un mensaje simple utilizando un dibujo y luego contó que “ellos fueron desafiados, especialmente en el área del perdón. Han experimentado mucho desengaño en sus vidas. Muchos de ellos no saben lo que es tener un buen amigo”.

Por favor ora por los niños que escucharon la historia, para que continúen aprendiendo de Dios y crezcan para convertirse en hombres y mujeres de fe. Ayuda y Desarrollo

Pakistán: El gobierno paquistaní ha comenzado el regreso voluntario de los Desplazados animándolos a regresar a los distritos a los que pertenecen. Alrededor de 200 000 familias han regresado a sus hogares en el Valle Swat o se han ido a otras regiones. Naturalmente estos Desplazados necesitan mucha ayuda ya que tienen que reconstruir sus vidas desde los escombros.

OM, en sociedad con el equipo de Operación Misericordia (una organización humanitaria con la cual trabaja OM), están investigando la posibilidad de asistir a 30 de estas familias. La aldea en donde estas 120 personas se encuentran es la misma que ya se trabajó dando respuesta al terremoto del año 2005. Entre estas 120 personas hay varias que necesitan cuidado médico, incluso algunas sufren de hepatitis. Los vecinos comparten comida cuando les es posible, sin embargo, el hambre y la desnutrición son problemas que necesitan ayuda externa.

A menudo los Desplazados regresan a sus hogares, pero encuentran que aún hay peligros a su alrededor. Los niños son los principales afectados por las peleas, y tanto el ejército como los otros grupos armados continúan en el lugar. Existen toques de queda, las balas siguen volando y las explosiones siguen quitando la paz y la quietud en la región.

Movimientos Misioneros Emergentes

Zambia: Alex, un estudiante universitario de los EE.UU., pasó seis semanas como voluntario de OM, sirviendo en casi todas las áreas del ministerio, desde predicar en iglesias hasta lavar la vajilla en la cocina. Aquí están sus comentarios:

“Me encantó servir con OM África observando las diferentes maneras en que ellos están movilizando a la iglesia en África para cumplir la Gran Comisión. Experimenté que la iglesia de Dios es fuerte en África y también, que están listos para ir y alcanzar su propio pueblo con el amor de Dios a través de Jesucristo. Vi como OM/ProChristo está preparando la juventud en África para ser futuros misioneros en sus propios países. A través de los cursos, los estudiantes pueden obtener enseñanzas bíblicas reales de lo que significa ser un verdadero discípulo de Cristo y cómo el rol de discípulo se integra con las misiones. ¿Qué mejor manera de alcanzar a las viudas, los huérfanos y los enfermos de África que con su propia gente convertida en hijos de Dios?”

Por favor ora por los estudiantes del curso de discipulado. Ora para que más individuos de África sean llamados a las misiones para alcanzar sus propias comunidades, y las aldeas y países vecinos.

Sudáfrica: Alabamos al Señor porque el programa evangelístico del Equipo de Entrenamiento en Botswana salió bien y porque todos retornaron sin problemas. El equipo tuvo un tiempo difícil en la frontera porque, debido a la diversidad de nacionalidades en el grupo, los funcionarios sospecharon que se podría tratar de tráfico humano. Alabamos a Dios por las visas que les fueron otorgadas a los estudiantes de Zimbawe en la frontera. Esto significa que podrán continuar estudiando. Sigue orando para que dichas visas sean extendidas, a fin de que puedan completar el entrenamiento de seis meses en Sudáfrica.

Namibia: Por favor ora por tres grupos de EE.UU. que harán evangelismo en diferentes partes de Kaokoland (en el noroeste del país). Los equipos están enseñando a los creyentes locales cómo llevar el evangelio a su propio pueblo así también a los turistas y visitantes de otras comunidades. Ora por la intervención divina durante las elecciones en Noviembre para que los cristianos puedan vivir vidas tranquilas y apacibles.

Bangladesh: El curso de computación y discipulado para creyentes está andando bien. Los estudiantes aprenden habilidades de computación y estudian la Palabra de Dios. Hace poco tiempo, ellos salieron para compartir lo que aprendieron. Esta fue una experiencia desafiante y gratificante a la vez.

Continuamos enseñando y desarrollando líderes para grupos de iglesias rurales. Además del campamento de entrenamiento del mes pasado, las reuniones de enseñanza se realizan en todo lugar donde vamos. Más personas están tomando un paso de fe, especialmente mujeres, pero este es sólo el comienzo de sus vidas espirituales: necesitan tomar pasos continuamente hacia la madurez espiritual.

Cuatro de nuestros obreros rurales se reunieron por algunos días de enseñanza, camaradería y oración. Muchos temas fueron debatidos, mientras buscamos de qué forma podemos servir mejor a Dios puesto que hay un número creciente de personas que están tomando decisiones que cambian sus vidas en estas regiones.

India

El señor y la señora Dev* tienen dos hijos y una hija. Tenían problemas económicos y no conseguían estar en paz. Mientras el equipo masculino de OM India estaba teniendo una reunión de oración casera, el Sr. y la Sra. Dev se unieron a la reunión y pidieron oración. Así que los que estaban allí apoyaron sus manos sobre ellos y oraron. Un mes después, la señora Dev pudo testificar que ahora tienen paz, y su economía está mejorando, y que compraron una Biblia. Están creciendo en el conocimiento de Dios y a veces asisten a las reuniones de oración.

Dilip*, quien ha ganado todo en la vida, estaba preocupado acerca de lo que pasaría con su alma una vez que muera. Algunos hombres del equipo, abriendo la Palabra le hablaron acerca de la vida después de la muerte y del juicio Divino, lo cual le causó gran sorpresa. Entonces se dio cuenta de que Jesús es verdaderamente el único Dios viviente. Ahora él y su familia están creciendo en la fe. Por favor ora por ambas familias. Ora por el continuo impacto de OM en India y para que muchos más lleguen a conocer a Cristo.

Creencias Mundiales

Medio Oriente: Por muchos años el esposo de Salmah* nunca la acompañó a la iglesia, aunque se declaraba creyente. Un día, ella llegó a su hogar con literatura de regalo, puso su precioso paquete en la mesa y su esposo tomó un libro de Reinhard Bonke. Al leer la tapa, se entusiasmó tanto que le pidió a su esposa que se lo guardara para leerlo al volver del trabajo. Ella estaba sorprendida por el repentino interés y se animó mucho. Con gran entusiasmo, ella vino a la conferencia para contar sus maravillosas noticias. Dios está alcanzando a personas a través de la literatura.

Una red de organizaciones, iglesias e individuos que quieren apoyar a nuevos cristianos en el mundo musulmán, han creado un foro para tal propósito con el lema: Deja Ir a Mi Pueblo Para Que Me Adore. Esta red de trabajo busca promover la libertad de elegir la fe, la libertad para adorar y practicar su fe, libertad para casarse con no-musulmanes y la libertad de criar a sus hijos en la fe cristiana.

Un concentración global en apoyo a estos derechos y libertades está programada para el domingo de pascuas 2010. Todas las ideas y estrategias son bienvenidas en el foro, lo que esperan será un recurso efectivo para grupos locales alrededor del mundo quienes abogarán por la justicia y los derechos de cristianos en todo lugar. Te animamos a que crees conciencia de estas necesidades entre otros grupos de derechos humanos.

Elementos de la parábola de los talentos, la última parábola de Jesús registrada en Mateo 25, me recuerdan a los inolvidables encuentros de mi infancia con… la Sra. Oppenheimer, una inmigrante alemana que llegó a Colombia. Para muchos de los niños misioneros en Medellín, ella fue nuestra primera profesora de piano. Dos veces por semana, la mayoría de nosotros nos turnábamos para escabullirnos de nuestra pequeña escuela para ir a la sala de piano, un paseo de dos minutos que bastaba para que imaginásemos las terribles torturas que nos acortarían la vida.

Bueno, estoy exagerando, ¡pero no demasiado! Puedes ver que, mientras que a la Sra. Oppenheimer no le gustaban los errores, lo que no toleraba era la pereza. Ella discernía cuánto talento había dentro de cada niño y nos presionaba para que progresemos lo más que podamos en el desarrollo de esa habilidad dada por Dios. ¿El resultado? Un progreso increíble y una música hermosa… o, para aquellos que no daban el máximo esfuerzo, ¡una respuesta que prefiero ni siquiera recordar!

Fieles con lo que tenemos

Esta última parábola de los talentos es la historia de tres hombres, a cada uno su señor le confirió una enorme suma. Fue contada por Jesús para describir el tipo de siervos que debíamos ser mientras esperamos su regreso (Mateo 24:45). No sabemos lo que hicieron los primeros dos con el dinero, pero se ocuparon, se arriesgaron y tuvieron ganancias del 100%. El que tenía dos talentos no se enfocó en que tenía menos que su colega. El que tenía cinco, no descansó cuando había ganado tres, aunque era el 50% más de lo que había ganado el segundo hombre. Ellos dieron lo mejor como siervos fieles y sabios que obtienen lo mejor de lo que tienen. Como los estudiantes de piano de la Sra. Oppenheimer que practicaban mucho cada día, estos dos hombres podían entrar en la presencia de su señor sin una pizca de temor.

El tercer sirvo tuvo miedo. Sabía que su señor era un hombre demandante (en griego: skleros, como en arteriosclerosis). En vez de arriesgarse a perder lo que había recibido, hizo lo más seguro: enterró el talento, lo mantuvo a salvo, y tembloroso lo entregó completo a su maestro.

Se nos demanda lo mejor de nosotros

Uno de los aspectos del carácter de Jesús era demandar, pero casi nunca hablamos de ello. Si, Él conoce nuestras necesidades y es sensible a nuestras debilidades (1 Pedro 5:7, Hebreos 11:34). Esta parábola, sin embargo, sugiere que no se conforma con nuestra pereza o nuestros esfuerzos mediocres mientras administramos los recursos, habilidades, y dones de increíble valor dados a cada uno de nosotros de acuerdo a nuestra habilidad. Nuestro servicio y participación en misiones, obviamente requiere la habilitación del Espíritu Santo. Pero Jesús apunta a las consecuencias y a la evaluación, al premio o al castigo basados en que si nos esforzamos en una fidelidad creativa o no lo hicimos por nuestra pereza y temor, fallando en hacer lo mejor con lo que Dios nos ha dado.

Un señor que saca lo mejor de cada uno

Antes de dejarte con la impresión de que la Sra. Oppenheimer era una tirana, debo referirme a otro recuerdo. Estaba participando de mi primer recital, interpretando una pieza mucho más avanzada que la que cualquier profesor me hubiera dejado tocar. Cuando terminé (no, no lo hice perfectamente) los padres presentes me dieron un amable aplauso. Los ignoré y eché una mirada furtiva a la Sra. Oppenheimer. Ella callada movió la cabeza y sonrió, fue sutil, pero sonrió. Esa era su manera reservada de decir: “bien hecho”. En ese momento, eso significó el mundo para mí, y me llenó de gozo.

Ya ves, la Sra. Oppenheimer era demandante, pero no era severa. Si hubiera tomado lecciones con ella por varios años y no por unos pocos meses, quién sabe cuál habría sido el resultado de aquel talento que, es triste decirlo, nunca lo desarrollé completamente.
